Tasers and Police

There have been several YouTube videos showing the police tasering people all of a sudden. One that really upset me was that they tasered a blind man because they thought that his white cane was a sword. What I want to find out is how tasers would be on someone with a pacemaker? And, HOW could we protect ourselves? Often the police act first, and then investigate the situation later (after the taser has been used). If you think that it couldn't happen to you - I bet that blind man thought the same thing. Any ideas?

Simple Question Asked!

by StarWish624 - 2014-05-13 07:05:11

You know, I was just asking a simple question - based on my viewing 4 tasings throughout the years. I wanted to know what to expect. I NEVER said ANYTHING bad about the police, I stated facts that sometimes the people who are authorized to use tasers sometimes make mistakes. And I had no information on how it could react with a pacemaker. Please, people DON'T look for trouble when none is intended. For years (until I got another car) I had a bumper sticker that I bought for my car that said TYPD - "THANK YOU POLICE DEPARTMENT".
I was JUST asking a question, because I had never seen the topic addressed, before. People are human, people make mistakes, police are people,
I am a single woman who lives full-time in a motorhome. I have been through many states throughout the years, and been stopped by officers during routine checkpoints. During such times, I have seen some other people tasered. So, I asked a simple question.
(PS) I am disabled, and the case of the YouTube videos of the blind man was discussed at my Handicapped Group Meeting, because we handicapped can be more vulnerable to adding to such misunderstandings by not always reacting as quickly, or in the same manner as a non-handicapped person. We were told that we should work to devise ways to protect ourselves in case of such "misunderstandings" with the police. No one else in the group has a pacemaker. So they said that I should find out what was the best way of handling such a situation. SO, I thought "I'll ask my Pacemaker Club Group".
I thought that this was a safe place to ask the hard questions, because we are all here, sharing our experiences. Was I so wrong?

There are all sorts of crazy stories out there if you go looking for it. The odds of getting randomly tasered by the police unprovoked are right up there with the odds of getting hit by a meteor or winning the lottery. Yes, it could happen. No, it probably won't. Don't lose sleep over it.

And no, a pm won't be damaged if you do happen to get tasered.

Your question was answered by me, a taser will not hurt you. It's been discussed here fairly frequently if you search the past posts. I guess this is a case of things coming across differently in pixels than we intend, but I definitely read a lot of negativity toward police in your question. Misunderstanding, no harm done, let's move on.

I have quite a few friends who are cops, my husband is a former cop, I own a taser. They've all done taser training both through the PD and the manufacturer of the taser. Pm's are part of the training,it won't hurt them. Active cops also get hit with a taser as part of their training. They take it seriously when they fire it.

Not only Police

Just a thought - Some people are carrying tasers instead of guns so it's not only police that have them. My neighbor has one. I was actually thinking about getting one myself when I got my CDL but then I got my pacemaker and decided I was better off with a gun for personal protection.
