speeding pacemaker

Hi,
My dad has had a pacemaker for quite a while. It is set at 60 and sometimes will go up to 80. Today it went to 115! He went to the emergency room and they told him sometimes this happens, but no other explanation. They did say if it gets to 150 then there is a problem. They gave him a Clear pill to put under his tongue and to take for three days. ( He lives in florida and live in Maryland). He doesn't know what the pill is called. Any one else ever experience this?

Thanks,
cheryl

nitroglycerin?

Pill sounds like nitro.

Having a pm set at 60 just means the pm won't let his heart go under that. His heart can go higher, either on his own or paced. Was he doing something or just sitting around?
-If he was doing something, it would be appropriate for the pm to pace him faster or his rate to go up on its own on exertion.
-If I have coffee too late in the day, or more than one cup, my heart will be doing 120 in bed that night. Some of us are more sensitive to caffeine than others. Alcohol can have the same effect.
-Sometimes the heart goes a little crazy on its own. Often it's more annoying than dangerous. Did they mention another diagnosis like afib or svt?

He should probably follow up with his own cardio to get a better idea what's going on. Is there someone local who can go with him so there are two sets of ears hearing what they say?
