Tattoos

Has anyone had any problems with getting a tattoo near their pm? I've recently got one on my wrist as a medical alert and my tattoo artist was terrified to go near me with the tattoo gun? I've been wanting to get one on my collar bone but not sure if the gun will effect my pacemaker because it will be hovering over top of it.

I'm not sure if getting a tattoo near your PM would affect it or not. I don't think it would harm your PM but it might cause some discomfort. I personally don't think I would do it. Getting tattoos anywhere else on your body is perfectly fine. I already had a tattoo on my chest before my implant and hated that the Dr. had to cut into it. He did a good job though and tried not to mess it up too much. The tattoo really hides the PM and except for the scar, I don't think anybody would ever know it's there.

If you get an infection close to the pm it could, in theory track down into your heart. I'd get it done somewhere else. Don't forget you will have to have that area re opened in future to replace pacemaker and you could end up with half a tattoo.

I had a pacemaker when I was 11. I never once thought I wasn't a 'normal kid' nor was I ever treated differently because of it. I could do everything all my friends were doing; I just happened to have a battery attached to my heart to help it work.
