just so you know we live on the border to the usa. on july 4th the three of us my husband and son who will be visiting from afar will drive up the river on sat. the 4th to watch the american fireworks and most likely have to sit in the suv with ice cream cones to fend off the mosquitoes. i will think of the blessings of us all having devices to help us in our lives.i will think of how much you contributed to your country giving us the freedom we have. and yes i am glad it isn't in the snow altho even that would be in freedom with our warm homes to return to jessiexx
Ice Cream Cones...we have.....
by donr - 2015-07-01 06:07:13
....something in common, Jessie.
I go back a wee bit farther than you, & since Memorial Day in 1941 (31 May back then) Ice cream cones have been the order of the day for us on That day & 4 July.
You mentioned mosquitoes - what is there about the sub-arctic mosquitoes that makes them so annoying? I ran into mosquitoes in Minnesota that were so large that they required a co-pilot & had to register flight plans w/ the FAA.
I was moose hunting in Newfoundland & ran across a pair sitting on a stump discussing whether to eat me there or take me home. hey finally decided that if they took me home, the big ones would take me away from them, so it was eat me there. Fortunately I was moose hunting so I was armed & shot the both on the spot.
The local game warden was ready to charge me w/ taking a flying species out of season & w/o a license, but finally succumbed to my plea of self defense. I ave them mounted & hanging on my wall in my office.
I never tried fending off mosquitoes w/ an ice cream cone - sounds like A waste of good ice cream to me.

What do Canadians do to...
by donr - 2015-07-01 08:07:15
....celebrate the great day?
Seems the real event in common throughout the US on 4 July is fireworks.
On an Army base that has the capability - an artillery battery - they "Fire the Union," a series of cannon shots (Blanks, of course) at 5 second intervals, one shot for every state in the Union. This event is performed at Noon & draws a big crowd. It is an awesome event. At the first shot, all activity w/i sight of the event ceases, including traffic, which halts. There is absolute silence, punctuated at the 5 second intervals by the cannon shots.

A scary thought...

...just think how close we all came to being one nation stretching from Mexico to the North Pole.
Intriguing how different the attitudes were across the St Lawrence River & the Great Lakes.

....to you - etc.
Nice to share July w/ our neighbors to the north.
Y'all come down for a BBQ in a few days - be glad to have you.
Aren't we both glad that our B'day isn't 1 Dec? Tough having a cook-out in 6 ft of snow.
May you have many, many happy returns.
