My first actual PM check

Hi Everyone,
I had my first PM check today after having it implanted on the 17th of Feb. It went really well except the pacemaker nurse's first comment to me was "I was looking at your birthday and see you are one of my youngest patients" (I am 52 and thought thanks a lot lol). I get a lot of comments from people saying I am way too young to have a PM but they don't understand that electrical problems of the heart can happen to people of all ages and I really didn't know that either until I came to this site. Every time I have been in the waiting room I have noticed everyone else in there is considerably older than me! Anyway, she said everything looks excellent. I am pacing 14.1% of the time. She said I have had no arrhythmia's and the battery should be good for about 9 1/2 years. I asked her about the discomfort I feel in my chest/armpit area and she said that is normal and that it could take a good 3 -9 months to get completely healed. She did give me a copy of the report but I didn't understand it all but will do some research here to try and figure it out. I saw my cardiologist next and he was really pleased with everything too. He did not think my settings needed adjusted at this time. It is set at 60 bpm and my pulse was 74 which is pretty normal for me. He said he wants my own heart to do as much of the work as possible. When he looked at my incision he noticed there was still a small scab on one end which I have noticed too and wondered why it hadn't fallen off. He picked at it and said there was still a stitch in there. He tried pulling it out and then had to go find some tweezers and scissors. The scissors were really dull and he was pulling and tugging on it and finally after a bit of pain he finally got it out but the incision broke open some and started bleeding. He was a little bummed because I have a tattoo there and he tried so hard to not mess it up. He decided to not put another stitch in but to close it with steri-strips. He told me to keep an eye on it and to come back and see him in 2 weeks to make sure it is healing ok. Other than that I was happy to get such a good report. In 3 months I get to try the remote thing so I'm happy I don't have to miss any more work for awhile. I hope you all are doing well. Take care and have a good day!

Sounds good well except the scab issue. Two weeks you will be good. I go tomorrow for my first check up, expecting good news as well. Again happy to hear you are doing well.

Thank you!

Thank you wjs1954. I wish you good news tomorrow and will be anxious to read your post. I'm sure my incision will be ok but I sure hope my tattoo isn't too damaged. He put about 6 steri-strips on it and a bandaid on top of that. He also gave me some extras in case they fall off. Take care!

Ignore them

It really bums me out when the medical people make some off the cuff, snide, remark. You have to remember they sometimes get people who came from some other area and aren't as well informed as they should be. You wish they would have just kept their mouth shut.

Doctors will tell you they have babies still in the womb on pacemakers, also people in their 90's. I wouldn't be surprised if we'll see the first 100 year old with a PM in the near future. Personally I'm trying for 100 myself.

So in your 50's you fall into the age 50 group.

Personally I try to just ignore the uninformed. It isn't worth the effort to get upset over their comments.

age

I was 51 when pm was implanted last September. I found that my doctor does not know what to do with me. He dismisses my pain, fears etc, and I am certain it is because all his other patients are retirees. I am no where near that. I am 15 years away from my pension, was hoping for a lot of life and activity. Yes, I am trying to change doctors-not an easy task when you work 60 hours a week. This 6 months has been a nightmare for me and I am hoping to resolve all these issues soon. So my point is pay attention to how you are treated, it is possible they will treat you like you are at your end.

Stay Positive as you can

Hey Judy
Im 53 and going in for PM with v low pulse n sinus pauses 4-8 secs soon, scared to death but need to get a handle on the anxiety, having PM cause I want to enjoy being 50 and 60 and 70 etc, after a lifetime of hard work I want to enjoy my retirement, you are not at your end- no where near, biggest thing to get your head around I think is the long term medical appts n supervision needed- for life, I've been talking to a few sensible friends who support and understand, try n find a buddy to talk too, good sense is often more helpful than medical details, Good Luck :) BPM

Never too young

by Nancylyn1991 - 2014-03-14 09:03:25

I received mine last year on Valentines day and I was only 42. I had a heart attack at 30 that just destroyed my heart then I had a stroke last year! I love my pacemaker cause he makes me function. I pace at 99 % and I feel great! Ignore people that say you are too young and just enjoy everyday!
