Hi group...I wanted to learn about lives of folks with pacemakers. My Mom, who is 83, is currently 300 miles away in a hospital. Her husband just called me to let me know that her doctors found her heart is sometimes dropping to 30 beats per minute and that they'd like to put in a pacemaker. She's my best friend and I'm worried. You guys should know...do ya think, if her health is otherwise good, that she should do well? Thanks very much,

.........................at any age it is hard to compare individual experiences and expectations...
Your good friends who have posted here are spot-on...
My own Fabulous Mother-in-Law..the 'Unique Eileen'...got her PM in her 80's and has never looked back..
It seems to me that..at any age..getting a PM wedged into your shoulder is all about how you get used to CHANGE ..and how , just maybe, you get used to a kind of submission..
PM people that get all the benefiets,..maybe just never post on this Forum...
They just get on with it..
Any thoughts..??

Hey Tat
You're absolutely right, as are the rest of you guys. I was only 75 when I got my PM like a bolt out of the blue, but the folks on this forum rooted for me and I did fine. Now I most of the time forget it's there. I still do everything I want to do, and also my job LOL
Not to worry

Hi, Jean. A word of encouragement from my own experience -- I am 80 and just had a new PM implanted last January. My old PM was replaced after seven years -- originally implanted because of heartbeat in the low 30's. I have had no problems whatsoever with either of them. I bounced back from the surgery both times with very little discomfort. This forum has been a Godsend. Best wishes to both you and your mother for many more happy years. BettyB
no worries

If she is otherwise healthy and the only thing wrong is a low heart rate, she should come out of this feeling better than ever. Most people breeze through the surgery, it sounds scarier than it is.

Nothing new to say, just agreeing with the others. After a short recuperation she should be better than ever. Best of luck. John
Thank You

If that is the only problem your Mom has the pacemaker should do the job. Keep in mind your Mom is 83 and it takes longer to heal and bounce back, but we do. Her state of mind about the pacemaker is important, if shes happy to get it, have a little discomfort, and get back to her routine, things will be great. But we all like a little babying, so do a bit of that too. Best wishs Jean If you can, bring her on this forum so she can ask questions, share her story, and answer questions...much like this.
