Sleeping on left side

Recently had new pm implanted, 3 lead, to synchronize heart. Had old pm 10 years, seems I remember the nurse telling me not to sleep on my left side when the old one was implanted. Is it ok to sleep on the pacemaker side?????

I was told by my Dr. that its better to sleep on the right side for my heart. Had enlaged heart with fluid buildup.
Always sleep on my left side becuse of acid reflux. Its ok to sleep on your left.

Blood Pressure

Several studies have shown that sleeping on your right side is better for cardiac patients because it lessens the demand on your heart and lowers the blood pressure. Gravity is working on your side this way as you're not asking the heart to pump blood in a higher vertical direction than where it's sitting in your body. I still sleep on my left when I can't get comfortable, but I do try to sleep on my right most nights.

You should be able to

Once you've healed up. It can take a while to be comfortable and I suppose it might make a difference where you're PM is located. Mine is left side below the collar bone and under the skin. I can easily feel it.

I'm a side sleeper and I could only sleep on my right side for a few months. Slowly I went to my left side using a pillow under my back and hugging another pillow.

Hope this helps

No problem

You didn't say how long it's been since your surgery, but once the incision has completely healed inside and out---about six weeks for most people--sleeping on your left side presents no problem.

If you're not sure if you're healed enough, a quick call to your doctor's nurse should answer your question.

When you feel comfortable

Had same fitted about 6months ago and all good. No advice from hospital but naturally not inclined to sleep on that side till healed up and all feeling comfortable.

Hope all well and you are soon feeling the benefits.

Rolling onto left side when sleeping

by tommiker70 - 2015-12-21 12:12:28

I had my pace maker put in two weeks 3 days ago.I woke up twice the last few nights with discomfort and a slight headache, from rolling on my left side. It was not intentionally. I must be healing up.I am trying to come up with a way to stop this from happening for a few more weeks. Any suggestions?
