Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and arrhythmias?
My doctors concluded that I had sick sinus syndrome and installed a pacemaker late last year. Soon after, I exhibited anxiety problems and had to take diazepam (Valium) to manage. At present, the heart appears to operate on its own (last check: PM used 7%), and blood pressures and heart rate are normal. However, without Valium a slight anxiety attack can lead to arrhythmias. It seems to suggest that a malfunction autonomic nervous system which can lead to sick sinus syndrome. Thank you in advance for your comments.

Stress and the heart

Hi Al I think it has always been known that emotional stress and anxiety are common trigger factors for cardiac arrhythmias ( others include caffeine and alcohol)
If you are interested in the physiological background to this phenomenon then try googling "Stress and arrhythmias".There are loads of theories which I hope you understand more clearly than I do !
Best of luck
Ian

I suggest you look into Magnesium. Magnesium is an important mineral that your heart needs and it has a calming effect. I think you will appreciate my suggestion.
I wish you well on this journey.

I just want to share about the quality of life after my pacemaker, and hopefully increase awareness that lifestyles do not have to be drastically modified just because we are pacemaker recipients.
Diazepam

Don't take Diazepam or any Benzodiazepines for more than 2 weeks. Do some research, google Benzodiazepines: how they work and how to withdraw, by Professor C Heather Ashton. Doctors won't tell you how bad the long term use is. I took Diazepam for anxiety in 1970 and am still on it.
Cheers
