Nervous worker

I am a little nervous about returning to work since I am in a stressful job and I drive or patrol for a living. I am not sure what to do in terms of changing professions or telling my employer about my pm. I mean I have a very stressful job and do not want to have anymore heart problems. Has anyone else had these feelings about returning to work after pm implantation?

Back to Work

Believe me...I hear what you are saying. I was implanted July 3rd with a defib/pacemaker. Went to work on rehab hours Aug 15 for seven days then full time on Aug. 26. I am in a management position for a large bank and I strongly believe the stress of my job played a large part of my massive heart attack which then turned into v-tach.

I was very nervous to return to work but I have a great boss who has been very supportative. I think that it is perfectly natural for you to be nervous especially if you were not overly ill before your pacemaker.

I take it from your posting that your employer is not aware of your pm. That certainly makes your situation much different from mine. All I can say is take it one day at a time and if possible, go to cardio rehab as some of the sessions are on stress management. That might not be something that is controllable within your job but sometimes even a tidbit of information can be beneficial.

Wish you much success on returning to work.

Job stress

Yes it was scary going back to a high stress work environment. I run a rural health clinic and do both primary and urgent care so I have to be prepared for anything. It was stressful before, it's still stressful, but it's ok. I also work a part time job in urgent care. I had such a good time off work while recovering (3 vacations!) I really didn't want to go back but need the income and insurance so there wasn't much of a choice. Have faith in yourself, it's normal to be a little nervous right now.

Can relate

When I had my device put in I was extremely worried about not just returning to work, but returning to working out in the gym. It was weird having this thing inside of me and I was not sure if I could still push myself like I did before. I have had my device for almost six months with being back at work and back in the gym I must say that I was worried for nothing. I am still able to work my long and goofy hours in the Emergency Room and I had to reduce my lifting weight in the gym, but that was the only change. I found the support from my co-workers and family really helped me as well.

I am just thankful that I am alive and that even though I have this pacemaker it is not the end of the world.
