I have lived with my heart "issues" since age 14. Open heart surgery at age 14 and again at 37 with mirtal valve repair and diagnosis of HOCM, and pacemaker at 40. My brother (age 49) who has lived with diabetes since age 13 had a heart attack last November, no previous cardiac issues prior to the heart attack and to make a long story short had 10% heart function after the heart attack and he ended up listed for a transplant and received a new heart on July 1st only 10 days after being listed. He is now feeling better than ever as far as energy and cardiac function. He has had a few bumps in the road and lots of other things that go along with getting a transplant..but he received such an amazing gift. I have always said I would never have a heart transplant, because I have been told this may be a possibility in my future, but now, after see my big brother, I am, well, almost jealous. No shortness of breath, no pacemaker, not being tired after walking short distances...what a blessing. I guess living this thru him has really put things into perspective...and makes one feel very blessed and thankful. Its very surreal.

I am no expert, but I believe that without the defibrillator that I have, I would be dead.
