Phones

Hi Alexandra
I've just been reading your recent messages & just wanted to say "hi & welcome".

I also want to wish you the very best for your procedure on Monday.

The only thing I had trouble getting used to is holding phones on the right side when I'm talking to people. My PM is on the left side. I am right handed so if I'm holding the phone to my right ear & then have to write something down while talking (eg an appt time)....it is a bit tricky trying to do both with my right hand at the same time! I've got used to it, had my PM 18 months or so now. It was just a bit tricky at first. We have cordless phones at home & they recommend you hold them + mobiles to the opposite ear from the side your PM is. We had corded phones at work so there it was ok to use my left ear & right hand to write.

Everything else I find ok.

Best of luck for Monday....please do let us know how you get on. Thinking of you.

Best wishes
Janey

left

There are a very few drs who put it on the non-dominant side but most don't even ask but automatically put it on the left. Once you heal, it doesn't matter which side it's on.

I told my dr I saw here that some people were told to use cell phones on the opposite side, he said use it whichever side I want, it does not matter.

The ideal side to put it is on the left because it's the shortest distance to the heart so they don't have to run the wire as far. For various reasons some people end up with it on the right, which works too, but that's why they usually try the left first.

Left handed

I am left handed-- but I do certain things with my right hand. I had asked my EP to put the pm on my right side but in the procedure room the people handling the equipment said I should have it on my left side-- it works better that way. Well that's all they had to say. So I have it implanted on my left side. Recovery was a little harder for me but it still wasn't terrible and after I healed its perfectly fine. It's been 13 months. I also went to the hair salon for the first couple of months. I couldn't possibly wash and blow my hair.

I will be thinking of you on Monday and wishing you well.

....Rockette! I'm impressed. I've met more leaders of Russia & Kings of Thailand than I have Rockettes!

Alexandra, I'm NOT being sarcastic - it's a fact.

All I have ever done is see your gang on TV - never in person. I feel culturally deprived.

TM: Thanks for making your comment - I read her profile page but missed that line somehow.

When she gets her PM, she will probably be able to take on those Thai kick boxers I tell hosts to stay away from.

A little late but

I thought I'd jump in here anyway. My PM is on my dominant side (I'm right-handed) because I also play the violin and didn't want it to to hit my PM whenever I played. The recovery from the surgery (the first couple weeks) is maybe a little more difficult, but after it's healed, it makes no difference. I've had a PM for about 12 years now and don't really notice it. I've returned to 100 percent full activity with my right arm.

Good luck on your surgery!

Jenny

I've seen many posts about people being concerned about exercise after having a device so thought I would let you know that yesterday I raced my first marathon since having my pacemaker fitted in fall 2004.
