New Implant

I had surgery a week ago today and am still really sore. Realistically, how long should I expect before the discomfort subsides?

It took me two weeks. I was sore... They implanted the pm on my left side and I am a lefty. They were suppose to put it on the right. I remember I had an ache thru my shoulder and I actually went to physical therapy a few times. Between heat and some massage therapy I was back to myself. I took extra strength Tylenol but nothing stronger. Hang in you'll feel better soon.

discomfort

It took me 2-3 weeks. Once I felt ok it was a bit difficult to remember not to lift arm above shoulder for the 6 weeks, so a bit of pain was a good reminder. After a while you will get so used to it that it just won't bother you.
I don't think it really matters what side it is on as if you are like me you use both hands and arms to do most things anyway, I also sleep more on my left side than right. It did take a few weeks to be able to do that, but after a while I did not even think about it.

4 weeks

Hi. For me it took 4 weeks for the pain & discomfort to go. I took paracetamol (I'm in the UK) for 2 weeks. After that the pain was not bad enough to need painkillers but I remember it was still sore. After 4 weeks all was well. Now I don't even know the PM is there!

Best wishes
Janey

Left Side Recommended

I am a lefty and have the ICD on the left side as recomended. The way the devices are manufacturered the leads do not flow as easily to the heart from the right side. As a lefty I have had to deal with a right handed world many times. I have not had the ICD long enough to comment of the disadvantages of having on the left, being left handed. Time will tell.
