While working my mini garden ~ wondered about hub's new pacemaker. Not wishing this on anyone, but considered, what do they do if say Emergency Medical Service had to jump start a persons heart ? I've had CPR training and the subject was never brought up . . . May just call our local EMS to find out . . I'll advise on here later [I can't be the only person out here thinking this. . . ] Linda N

Using the paddles on someone with a pacemaker was covered in my last CPR class, they even passed one around for everyone to see. Just don't put the paddles directly over the pm, use it like you would on anyone else. This is to get the strongest shock, not because it will damage the pm if you accidentally put it right over the device.
Paddles

Hi Lindasue101, I have a PM and two months after fitting I had a massive heart attack. My heart stopped 3 times and I was paddled back each time, apparantly with no ill effect to the PM. It was explained to me on here that the casing on the PM acts like a Faraday cage and diverts the current around the PM instead of through it, and also the silicone coating acts as an insulator anyway. So all being well, no ill effect. I dont recommend it on a regular basis though, as it does leave some nasty burn marks on your skin for a while, but hey, everything has a down side, at least I'm still warm and vertical. The upside is, now I can jump start my car with a finger in the cigarette lighter socket!
Cabg Patch has the right attitude to all this as always!
Keep smiling.

was wondering that too.

I had the paddles used on me 4times up to the max to get me back in rythem. Yes they do leave burn marks on you but will eventually go away.

Geeze ! what caused THAT ? Your rythem went haywire ~ how so ? Thinking this sort of conversation needs to be on "chat" rather than General. You folks in the "know" need to advise us "newbies" . . Love is in the air ~ just sooo good to know y'all are here ! Linda

Um, everyone should get inside when there's a storm, paced or not!!!! I live in FL, more people die here from lightening strikes than any other state. I have a lightening detector I take along when I'm out hiking or whatever with my scouts or take my girls to the beach. If I don't have it with me, I just count. Every second between the time you see the lightening and hear the thunder is a mile. Thunder in the distance is not dangerous, to me that's just a sign to start paying attention.
Linda, I don't know about everyone else, but I don't pay any attention to what category the posts are in. If you go to Recent Messages, they all show up together. We drift topics all the time, no big deal :o)

It seems I have been right all along about electrical storms. I have always been nervous and even keep away from windows rather than go to look at all the flashes. Husband laughs at me, but it seems from what you say Tracey that many people die from a strike. What about inside cars? Is one safe there?

Cars with a metal roof are safe. Here are some basic guidelines from NOAA

Annie, you are fine looking through the window! Just don't open it. ;o) Lightening storms can be stunning, nature's own fireworks show.

God bless you, AngryArrow ~ I hope your wishes are fulfilled. A person knows his/her own mind and having made known how you want to be treated, while you are of sound mind ~ no one can treat you otherwise, unless they are unaware of what you have on paper. Paper that is with appropriate persons. If in your own home plaster that sucker in a baggie and stick on the frig ! Be certain your local EMS has it on file too and a really wise person would wear a medic alert bracelet etc. Hubs and I are not "there" yet. He is an active 82 yr old [older than dirt] and I'm 67 [dirt]. If like the little 92 yr young gal I help look after . . . yer gonna live forever ! ! It's all in God's timming. . . . Hope to read your posts on here for a long, long time to come ! :)

TraceyE ~ thanks for that. . .kinda what I figured. Saves me a call to EMT.
Have another Q: [aren't wenewbies pests ?] Electrical storms. . . . hubs is out on his riding lawnmower and I hear thunder . . . . Should PMers duck and cover at the slightest sign ?
