We live in the foothills of the Appalachians near the southern end of the Trail - kinda out in the woods in North Georgia (Nawth Jawja phonetically to 'yankees).
Black bears are coming back & we have had a mature adult male trekking through out yard lately. Bent the wrought iron pole holding up our bird feeder. Carried away a bag of garbage into the woods & we have not seen it since. Hope he liked eating empty milk cartons!
This past Mon, I looked out the 2nd floor window & saw him nosing around the now nearly grounded bird feeder. Grabbed the camera & got several shots of him wandering around the front yard.
Noticed he was now wandering toward the front dor, so hustled my bod downstairs just in time to see our three Shih Tzu's sniffing at the door in the attack mode. The door has a lkeaded glass insert in it that distorts whatever is on the other side, so the bear could not see in. Since it was dark in the house & brilliant sunshine outside, he could not have seen much anyway. Next thing I noticed was that his nose was pressed up against the glass, being slightly crazy (As opposed to insane) I walske over & pressed my nose against the glass right where his was & there we stood for a few seconds till suddenly he stood up & his nose was about 5 ft above ground level. His right front paw was on the thumb lever that opens the door & his left front about 6 ft above the ground.. He4 wa shaving a field day sniffing around - when suddenly there was an audible "CLICK" from somewhere within the door & he took off like a shot for the woods.
It was then that I discovered that the deadbolt was NOT thrown & had he pushed down a bit harder on the thumb lever, the door would have opened & he'd have been in the kitchen w/ me.
There'd have been one *&^%$^%$^ of a fight right there inside the door had that happened. I don't know if it would have worked, but all I could think of was to land the first blow w/ my camera across his big ol' black nose & hope that it would hurt him enough to make him run. Maybe, OTOH, seeing three Shih Tzu's in attack mode would have made him ROFLOL till he died - in which case I'd have been charged w/ cruelty to animals.
I asked a neighbor what he'd do about a bear in the yard - Shoot him, dig a hole & bury the corpse was the answer. That option was out - can you imagine digging a hole large enough to hold a 300lb bear in Hard red clay w/ a D handled shovel? My neighbor is a farmer & owns a Ford tractor w/ a backhoe.

...there's no bell on the door. Knock, however & I'll hand you our latest M-1 bag of garbage - grapefruit rinds, coffee grounds, bacon grease & stale bread crusts.
That's what I scattered all over Las Cruces, NM the night I took it out the back door, looked up & saw a tarantula the size of a meat platter ambling along the wall just above my head.
I think I'll face the bear over the tarantula, thank you.

No Door Bell
by Grateful Heart - 2013-06-14 04:06:23
Ah....that explains it. Bears can't knock, but they can ring a doorbell. I guess that's why he tried the door handle.
I'm with you Don, I'll take the bear over a tarantula any day!

Wasn't your stay in the hospital exciting enough!
Glad you made it out alive to tell the story.

You are! Good things the pups were there to back you up, I have no doubt you could have discouraged said bear from becoming a real home wrecker.
We have bears around now in NE Ohio, not around me that I know, but within 15 miles they've been spotted, just this week.
I have coyotes, mink, racoons and such to deal with, predator wise. Then the lovely deer and bunnies to even out the wildlife.
Maybe you should watch the movie with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins where Mr Pitt has a run in or two with a grizz, get some pointers?
Or stay in,keeping eyes peeled, and doors locked?
Like you need more excitement?
Guess retirement has it's plus's?

...Bears, coyotes, racoons, wild turkeys. deer, squirrels, bunnies, rats, birds of every color & stripe, turkey buzzards, feral dogs & cats &, it's rumored, bob cats & maybe a mountain lion or two.
It's a reverse zoo - they run free &we live in a cage.
Oh, well...

Great story, but nose to nose with a 300 lb black bear can have it's drawbacks...at least you had the
Shih Tzu's there for protection... :)
and of course, next time... lock the door before going nose to nose...
I guess my best advice to you would be... stay away from black bears and Jeep Cherokees...
good to see that your recent medical problems haven't interfered with your sense of humor...
glad you're back...
Lou
ps... my wife's Shih Tzu/ Havernese mix chases squirrels, but is afraid of rabbits...go figure...
Moral to Bear Story
by donr - 2013-06-14 12:06:27
Lubro: Wife had just gone through door a short while before. She is notorious for not locking it on leaving. She learned to lock; I learned to check.
SPARROW: I know better than to play w/ bears - they are fast for their size & far more agile than they look. At least this is a Black instead of a Grizz! Our county has not had bears in it for yrs - they are coming back. My concern is that he run afoul of one of my neighbors w/ a back hoe on a dark & windy night.
I feel the way you do about snakes - in my yard or in my house & they are mine! We have found two snakes in the house - non-venomous - & a 2 1/2 ft Timber Rattler in back yard.

I am just flabbergasted ... I'm a city girl and if I saw a bear of any color I'd lock myself up and call 911 The most we have around here are aggressive birds.
A useful tip

Hi Don. A few years ago I went to a talk by an American author , Bill Brydon, who was launching his latest book here in the UK. The subject was about hiking in the Appalachians.
In the Q & A session afterwards, I asked "What advice would you give to hikers re the black bears ?
His answer was " Always choose a hiking companion who walks slower than you do !! "
Good advice eh !

We do not have any nasty critters who cause that type of concern. We only have a few snakes, red back spiders (have been bitten by one and survived) box jellyfish.....crocodiles etc lol
Coyotes & respect
by donr - 2013-06-15 07:06:47
Coyotes present a different problem here in the US. Our population is highly rabid. If you see one, you consider it to have rabies & you steer clear. Ditto for bats, skunks, racoons & feral dogs & cats.
I've been exposed to rabies three times. The first time was courtesy of a coyote my son shot while we were hunting deer in NW Missouri. The beast was standing stock still, watching son from about 30 yards. THAT is NOTnormal behaviior for a coyote - they normally RUN from people. We were skinning it out & we each nicked a finger while doing the job. He had shot the animal between the eyes & scattered brain material all over & that's where the rabies virus resides. In retrospect, we realized that the animal was probably rabid & the appropriate medics agreed w/ us. Got the shot series.
My 2nd & 3rd exposures were fron bats flying through my hair at night. Any physical contact w/ a bat is considered by the US CDC (Communicable Disease Center) to be a rabies exposure.

cottage near north bay ontario canada
by jessie - 2013-06-15 12:06:21
one time we rented a cottage in northern ontario close to where i was born. there were bears in the garbage dump rooting for garbage.a mother and her cubs. our children found this out when they went exploring. it was the last time they went exploring on that trip. you have to have a lot of respect for them and leave them alone. here at home where i live now we have a lot of cyotes sp. for some reason. these i am afraid of. we drive in the country and the other day while driving in to the city one ran in front of my car. i just missed him by a thread. i have a lot of respect for these critters....jessie
Predators!
by ohiolaura - 2013-06-17 06:06:18
This am,just before 7,as I let my 3 dogs out to do their morning stuff,I saw 2 coyotes (again) in the field, which is about 300 ft from my house.
Luckily, the house canines did not see the wild canines, which could have been ugly,as I walked to the edge of the deck, they watched me,waited then ran for the woods.
10 min later a big doe was out in the field, not too far from where the coyotes had been,go figure!
No bears, which I will take, guess I may have to have my hubby show me where the shells are,as I may have to go out and take aim at those critters.BTW,I am actually talented with a gun! Thanks to my dad, teaching me,as well as my inheriting his keen skills with shooting!
You know you're wired when...
You have the perfect reason to show off your chest.

Empty milk cartons....how's a bear gonna feed a family on that?
I'm guessin' you will have locked doors from now on. So next time Patch....just ring the bell.
