A Plea

Ian: et al: We have just suffered a major national tragedy. All 300 million of us are grieving. Tonight our President is going to address the nation at a memorial service.

Please let us grieve in peace & tranquility. There will be time for debate & criticism when we have finished our grieving process.

We still do not know exactly what happened, & will not until law enforcement has finished its investigation. Until then, there is more inaccurate speculation in the 24 hour media than can be measured. Literally millions of words & little of it based on fact.

It was obvious that this thread was going to become a flame war - not needed. Enough of the moderators (earlier in the day) agreed that this was an appropriate approach if the thread started to take an inappropriate turn that when I saw the results of the first 7 comments I decided that it was time to pull the plug. None of the other moderators were on line at the time.

I take full responsibility for the action. If you strongly disagree w/ my discretion, you may take out your ire on me - via PM, please.

Don

The voice of reason. I, for one, couldn't agree with you more. Our hearts are saddened over this tragedy. May all the victims rest in peace and their families somehow recover.

Grateful Heart

I agree.

Don,

I knew that this thread was at high risk for becoming a flame war. However, I decided to support Ian. I only read the first comment after mine that addressed Ian and me as "useless idiots", and then it was gone. Didn't read the others as it was nighttime here. I think you were right to delete the thread.

We are grieving with you.

Inga

Thanks, Don

I didn't read the posts & glad I didn't. We have enough sadness without a lot of bickering.

I promise you , your nation does not have the monopoly on grief. Im sure everyone in the PM club, regardless of country of origin is saddened beyond words by the massacre in Connecticut and our thoughts go out to you.

The fact that one of the murdered children was from the UK underlines that we live in a global world and tragedies like this affect us all.

When I took to my bed there was my post , a supportive reply from Inga and a thoughtful response from Zia. I haven't a clue what happened after that ! So all I can say is that I remain 100% behind the sentiments I expressed in my original post.

I'm sure you would have taken the right action Don if subsequent postings got out of hand.
