Real Life Test of "WoundSeal" Powder

A while back I posted about substances that could stop bleeding. I have had some around for years while I was taking the anticoagulants Warfarin, then Pradaxa, and now Xarelto, but never needed it for minor cuts and scrapes. Well......I managed to slice the back of my left thumb (don't ask) and was bleeding like the proverbial stuck pig. Realizing that she did not want me to bleed all over her car on the way to the ER to get sutured, my wife reminded me about the "WoundSeal" I keep in my
First Aid kit. The instructions say it needs blood to work, so I controlled the bleeding slightly while she sprinkled it on the gash, and presto, the bleeding stopped. It was so positively sealed that I did not go to the ER and just bandaged it, figuring I would go if it started up again. Never went, and now it is healed and barely a scar. No sign of internal damage, either.

Wound Seal and Xarelto
by Zetha - 2015-10-23 09:10:01
Hi PJ, happy to know about 'Wound Seal'. I have been taking Xarelto for 3 days now and that is my husband's biggest concern, what to do if I should for instance, cut myself in the kitchen or whatever. Especially as there is up to date no meds available to turn the effects of Xarelto around, where as there is no such problem with Warfarin. I have however chosen Xarelto above Warfarin because I understand it has less side effects and one does not have to have weekly blood tests. X is however, where we live, 3 times the price of W and no med insurance pays for X.
I would be interested if you can give me your opinion on the 2 medications, as you have had experience with both, please?
Zetha.
Wound Seal

Hi PJ, Very interesting posting as to control small wound injuries !! As I manage to injure myself quite often & being on blood thinner the usual band-aids don't always do the job. I will try to find Wound Seal also !! I want to add that I've been on Xarelto for years but developed a skin allergy on my forehead & scalp with itching. I had my Dr. switch me to Eliquis a couple years ago which helped the allergy, somewhat !!
I did find that wounds stop bleeding in less time and also bruising is far less with Eliquis.

Warfarin basically is a pain in the finger

I was given warfarin for ten years due to A-fib. I hated the frequent visits to get stuck and get an INR reading. Because I refused to limit my diet to sticks and rocks, because I like salad greens and other heathy stuff, I was taking 15 mg of rat poison (warfarin) to get therapeutic (2.5 INR) and was feeling many side effects. One nurse told me that was enough to bleed out a horse. The only good thing about warfarin is that if you have a bleeding event, they can give you a massive shot of vitamin K to start clotting. Pradaxa and Xarelto to me at least, have had no bleeding issues. Pradaxa gave me bad heartburn if not taken with food. Xarelto has been very benign and no side effects, in spite of what others may say. Several folks on this forum have praised Eliquis, which I have not tried. It is your choice, do not let your doctor dictate your prescription, you have a voice in your choice, [Hey, I like that. I may use it again. "YOU HAVE A VOICE IN YOUR CHOICE!]
It is true that warfarin is less expensive because it is generic now, but when you figure in the cost of bi-weekly co-pay to get stuck, it balances out to go with another choice.
Good Luck and Good Life. PJ
Thanks

Thank you PJ, I have taken the fourth X tab today and am feeling quite ok today. I realize I do not have a choice regarding blood thinning meds due to the AF and what you are saying about fewer side effects with Xarelto, it is the same as I have been informed.... my cardiologist mentioned Warfarin but I immediately said I would rather take Xarelto and that was fine and thus he prescribed it. We also feel that the med insurance should realize that the cost is not really so much more seeing that they do pay for all the blood tests for Warfarin, so it does not make sense. Anyway, I am thankful that I am able to go with Xarelto .... thanks for the feedback, Zetha.

You gotta quit

PJ - you gotta quit sticking your fingers in the saw.
Or - if you're going to use a knife, make sure it's sharp. Dull knives are much more dangerous than sharp ones.
Or- you gotta quit making you wife so angry she resorts to using sharp objects to get your attention.
Glad you're OK. Just don't make it a regular practice.
