I have a St.Jude CRT-D. It is implanted under my breast and chest muscle. It is big and I am small breasted. A mammogram will squish it. I have had breast ultra sounds along with mamograms in the past. I have a history of breast cancer so I can't skip this check up. This will be my first breast check since the ICD was implanted 7 months ago. The breast cancer was not on the side the ICD is. Will ask my breast specialist but wondered if any of you have some thoughts on this. I was thinking they could do a mammogram on the breast that had the cancer and do an ultrasound on the other one with the ICD. Can you even have a ultrasound with a ICD?

Lucky us, both breast cancer and heart disease. I had a mammogram and ultrasound in July. They were able to safely do the mammogram on the side with the AICD, but they weren't as aggressive to get a good image as they have been in the past. That has me a bit worried. I also worry about the area under the device that they can no longer image with either the ultrasound or the mammogram. The ultrasound uses sound eaves so there is no electromagnetic interference.

We can have both. Mine is under the breast, also, but I have a pm which is smaller than an icd. They did a very gentle image first to see where the pm and leads were, then they proceeded with the regular scan. I got my first pm in 1994 so I've had quite a few. I always go back to the same place and they are digital now so the tech always has my previous images in front of her when she does it.
I've had u/s also. After 3 replacements, the scar tissue around the pm was getting uncomfortable so we did an u/s to make sure nothing else was going on, then when I had the battery replaced last time a plastic surgeon cleaned up the scar tissue and rebuilt the pocket.

Thank you ladies! Helpful information. That too scares me that they can't see under the CRT-D as it covers quite a bit of my upper breast and I have had previous biopsies in that area. I received my breast cancer diagnosis one week and the next week during my pre-op EKG my heart disease was diagnosed. I was in shock. I thought I was going to die. The cardiologist almost did not approve of the surgery. I think he doubted I would make it through the surgery. A double whammy in a two week period. Actually, had I not had the breast cancer and pre-op I would not have known about my heart condition. I had not ever had an EKG before. The doc said I probably had the heart condition for many years. So I am great-full all worked out and I now have my heart life jacket with battle scares in all.
As usual I am relieved when members can address my concerns. There sure is a variety of members out there .

I've had both mammo and u/s after ICD.
They did get a view behind my device but I had to be a bit of a contortionist but mine is not buried.
Glad you are doing well after all you've been through.

I have an ICD also but implanted just under the skin. Your question helped to answer mine. Thank you.

Today I explained everything to my doctor, he set my lower rate back to 80 and I felt an immediate improvement.
Mammo's

I had a mammogram 4 months after my PM surgery, and it wasn't painful, for me atleast.
I did get to see afterwards the images and saw the PM in the picture, which was wild.
It didn't feel any different to me than previous mammo's,and the tech was aware and did things accordingly.
I cant help you with the other questions, sorry.
Good luck!
