BobC: Does anyone know of an outlet that has Pacemaker lapel pins for sale? About 1" in diameter that can be attached to a shirt collar or between the buttons on a shirt front. I donât care much for bracelets or neck chains.

Hi Bobbie ... i was interested in your response. Every time the subject of Medical Bracelets etc comes up on here I have responded with the question " Why have one " in a genuine desire to know the answer.
At last you have come up with something :-
- Your Dr thinks they are not necessary ( I'm with him 100 % )
- BUT " they make some people feel better !"
In my continuing search for the meaning of life , could anyone tell me why a piece of junk jewellery with info about a PM " makes you feel better ? " perhaps it has magical therapeutic qualities which I didn't know about ?
Cheers
Ian

I guess sometimes you need info on the "LABEL" --- I would guess if your 100% dependent on the pacemaker and you faint there are times you don't want to be defibrillated ( AV-node ablated ) for nothing and waste time ----also if you list what blood thinner you are on the can shoot you up with vit. K-----if your on warfarin---- if your on Pradaxa--- there is no antidote----so I think that the medical jewelry come in handy for some people.

I agree absolutely that if you are on warfarin it is best that the surgeons know before embarking on emergency surgery...nobody wants to bleed to death; if you're on Pradaxa it doesn't matter if they know or not because you may still bleed to death but they can't do anything about it !
.. but as far as PMs are concerned , if you are 100 % PM -dependent I can't see that a badge on your lapel would help you . PM dependency means to me that you have absolutely no heartbeat whatsoever without the help from your PM. If your PM packs up you're a goner ... if your PM hasn't packed up but you're unconscious from another cause then just lie there in oblivion and let them try EVERYTHING to save you ( and there is an enormous chance that they will see the bulge and scar by your collar-bone anyway ) . I have given it alot of thought and just cannot see the point of keeping a Medical Jewellery outfit in business by telling the world that I have a PM.
Bobbie makes the point that Bob has the right to wear a PM lapel pin....of course he has ... he has the right to wear a crucifix to keep vampires away ... but that would be a waste to time too !
Others may think differently.. and that is the beauty of this forum !
Best wishes Bob, whatever you decide !

Hi Ian, quick point. Many people who are 100% dependent have an "escape Rhythm" that can keep them going until they reach hospital; sometimes it not a lot---but I would guess the EMT would like to know if the person is 100% dependent so he could see if the person has this Rhythm. As you said it's always up to the person when it comes to medical jewelry.

I had a pacemaker when I was 11. I never once thought I wasn't a 'normal kid' nor was I ever treated differently because of it. I could do everything all my friends were doing; I just happened to have a battery attached to my heart to help it work.

Hi Bob I'm sure people will reply and let you know how to get a PM lapel pin ; if people are willing to part with their money there will always be a marketing man who will supply the product.
I must be missing something .... but at no time during or since having a PM fitted has any nurse or Dr suggested that I need wear any piece of jewellery to advertise the fact that I have a PM ( maybe it's an American thing ? )
I can vaguely understand that certain conditions such as diabetes, or seizure disorders or allergies to morphine may justify carrying a warning of some sort to help Drs with their diagnosis or to avoid certain drugs but WHY, WHY, WHY do we need tell people that we have a PM ??
Presumably , Bob, you are going to black out and be unable to communicate , but you will have had the foresight to fix a PM lapel badge to every shirt that you wear ( whatever you do, don't black out when you're not wearing a shirt ! )
Are PMs not installed to prevent us from blacking out and are they not as reliable as any technology can be ? Would you think I was mad if I wore a lapel badge saying I have a heart, or kidneys that can pack up at any time ... i bet you would and yet PMs are more reliable than our own hearts.
I'm sorry Bob but I just don't get it ... save your money and forget lapel pins IMHO.
Cheers
