smokes
by manaman - 2012-09-19 01:09:54
congrats! 2 days and no smoke! You have crossed the line!
I smoked for over 35 years and just put 'em down almost 20 years ago. NOW for a little extra incentive!
Each week for 19 years I pur 1/2 what I spent on smokes in a savings account (didn't mess with it) I said that I would take a trip with my wife that SHE always wanted to go on ater 18 years. This past MARCH we enjoyed a weeks vacation on the shores of WAKAKI< HAWAII. eNJOYED IT ONE HECK OF A LOT MORE THAN THE SMOKES..
You may want to try the extra incentative thing!
Stay clean and mean, no smokes no jokes> You have it licked now.

Be Strong

Hey Abi,
I smoked for 35 years, quit on 9/11/09 which was the day of my heart surgery. I also have mild emphysema as a constant reminder of all those great cigarettes.
Jon Stewart, the commentator on "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central, quit smoking a few years back and he noted that "the heroin really takes the edge off..." Quitting smoking is harder than quitting drinking according to more than one alcoholic that I am acquainted with.
You just need to make it another week or so and it gets much easier. One thing you can do- if you have not already done it, get all your lighters, ashtrays, cigarettes, everything to do with your former smoking life- throw them in the trash. You can approach it like this- you are not quitting smoking, you are quitting BUYING and OBTAINING cigarettes. If you feel a particular need you would have to get in the car, drive to the store, buy smokes and lighters, etc.- that gives you time to be strong and NOT DO IT. Don't let an impulse set you back.
If you have close friends or family that are smokers you probably need to stay away from them for a while as much as possible.
You are going to feel much better and your life will be better. Regarding the weight gain- I gained about 10 pounds and after a year I low carbed and lost it. Don't try to diet while you are fighting the urge to smoke. You can handle one thing at a time.
I am pulling for you kid- you hang in there.

Mrs Tattoo Man and I packed in 7 years ago. Now I'm not saying it was easy, but it can be done.
We found that being really honest with eachother and saying .." I realy fancy a ciggy right now" would elicit the response of "Yup,..but are you going to ?"...three seconds later the response..."Nah ! "
Ebfox makes a very valid point,..namely that you pack in cigs at the shop, not at home.
Abi, you have made a good move by getting the encouragement of a gang of people who have been there and are really with you. Pretty well all people with addictions have already built a group around them that support / encourage the continuation of the dependance.
Manaman makes a good point re cash....I once overheard a conversation along the lines of ..." You must be well off to have two holidays a year !"
"Yeah,..and you must be loaded to afford to smoke 40 fags a day"
Bear in mind that here in the UK a pack of 20 will set you back about £7..40 a day is £14...thats £98 per week...thats...£5096 per year...make that 10 years and you get a Porsche.
And you feel so damn good about it !!
Stick in there ,..you have masses of support here.
Tattoo Man , up here on the Lincolnshire border with Notts ( Yup,.. I've got a Porsche too !)
Tic Tac

I quit smoking maybe 16 years ago. I only used Tic Tac candy. I smoke about 1 pack a day. Congrats ! You can do it !!
Of course you can do it

I quit the habit Feb. 13, 2011 after a pack a day habit of over 50 years. There is no easy way to do it. You can, if you make up your mind. I keep a carton in my studio and of course I am frequently tempted. So far have not given in. My doc said call him before I light up. Sure, I'm going to bother him about that? It seems to me a matter of willpower. And in my case, remembering what acute shortness of breath was like.
to not smoke

I don't know if this will help but it is worth a try. My son decided to give up. On the 2nd day he told me that he had flu as he was aching badly. I told him it was not flu but that he was 'de-toxing' and gave him 500 mgs aspirin, and gave him some to take to work. he took about 4-5 doses over 2 days. He then phoned me and said that not only did he feel much better, but had totally lost his craving. He had been a very heavy smoker. That was 18 months ago and he has not touched one since and also not had any more aspirin.
I told our 'Quit Line' this but they were not interested! Maybe it won't work for many people, but it did for my son.
Be strong with whatever program you do, for you will feel so much better when you have quit and de- toxed.
All the very best

look at it this way.....

Youre going thru a tough time with your heart, people working to lengthen your life, keep you going.
They are there to help you,and you have to help yourself, take responsibility for yourself. Why do damage to yourself? We are here to live, have a life, why shorten it and destroy it?Doesnt make sense to me.
Plus you have a family, live long and strong, for them and yourslef.Stay busy,I agree, which will help you.
Plus, once you get the toxin out of your body, everything smells and tastes better, from what Ive heard from former smokers.
Dont worry about the weight, use the energy you used to in another way, maybe weight watchers if youre worried about adding pounds.Walk, eat right, and live.
Its a way better alternative for sure.

That is wonderful! I dont really have any tips but just wanted to give you some encouragement because that is a huge accomplishment.
Keep reminding yourself of how much better you will feel. If you've already gone 22 days without, you dont need those sticks anymore!
