I was hoping that maybe someone could give me some info.. I'm currently a professional firefighter and would like to become a part of the USMC Reserve. I have a pacer, but it's non dependant, and was hoping someone might have made it in with similar circumstances so I can bring it up when I talk to the recruiter. Thanks for your time!

Firefighting isn't enough of an adrenaline rush for you? But good on you for wishing to serve.
I'm a Brit so I have no idea if the USMC Reserve will take you with a pacemaker - I assume a pacemaker not an ICD. But being a professional firefighter will surley count in your favour. I guess the only worry for the Corps will be your getting hit on the implant site and being out in the boondocks if something goes wrong.
Worth a try though - I had two good US Foreign Service friends who were in the USMC back in the day. Sadly one has gone to that Great Muster in the sky but the other is living a very active retirement.
Learn all the words to The Halls of Montezuma - if nothing else it'll impress the recruiting officer!
Wishing you all the best - keep safe.

I was in the Corps for 30 years and it is highly unlikely NOW since our Commander In Chief has decided to stand down and our FOPs are being dismantled(Forward Operating Positions) in Afghanistan. A couple of years ago they might have taken you for behind the lines duty or state side...sorry, but try the Navy-they'll take anybody-(just kidding, in case any squids are offended). Good Luck to you.

Dalton, I am a former Army Recruiter that just retired in Aug 2012. Unfortunately you cannot enlist into the Military with a Pacemaker. The reason being is you are NON DEPLOYABLE, and for some reason people think you can enlist for behind the lines type jobs....NOT TRUE, everyone that enlist has the same medical fitness standards that must be met. Sorry for the bad news but I prefer to be honest and up front when I was a recruiter so as not to waste everyone's time.

I am an active duty US Army Soldier. I had an ICD inserted on the 20th of Dec 2012. I will be going through a board to determine if I am fit to remain on active duty good luck with.
