Man survives first week with artificial heart after world-first operation:
A 75-year-old Frenchman was feeding himself and chatting to his family more than a week after becoming the first person to be fitted with an artificial heart, one of his surgeons said.

And I thought having a pacemaker was cool!
A peaceful & healthy new year to you all-

................votres rensigneuments sont tres educationelles.
Et , pour ca,..je te, dis ,..Merci.
Your last paragraph does, however , leave me perplexed...........
Your delight in seeing the Australians..'Actubarryly', slightly fatter than the Brits requires an explanation...
I am all for the development of the Blessed Language, but am concerned that you have joined that group that are hellbent on diluting the ancient values that, so many of us, hold dear..
You there...' IAN MC '...write out 'ACTUALLY' twenty times, in neat handwriting and have it on my desk by the moaning.....

If you put aside that tub of cream that you were about to eat before you changed this thread to a debate on international obesity levels, you will see that ;-
I was merely acknowledging Acubarry, our Australian friend who started this whole thing and is probably wondering how a very interesting post on artificial hearts has changed into a discussion on blubber-levels around
the world !
Cheers
Ian. ( nibbling a raw carrot as I write this )
Vive La France !!

With the French great love of wine I would have thought that they would have invented an artificial liver first but this really is exciting news
I see that 4 more are being fitted in the new year and that shares in the French company making the A.H. have quadrupled in value. Let us all hope that the results are encouraging !
I have a small house in France and have been waiting 6 months to get a plumber to fix the pipes so I'm not expecting my request for an artificial heart to be processed quickly !
Cheers

Now, I don't have a place in France, but have Family in Nantes, Lilles, Provence, Dunquerque, Alsace, Nord,...
I have dined with everyone of them this year..and one thing that is very clear to me ..they are universally ....Very Fat......
As a , so called ,..'Runner' ..I am ,..just as you are , Dear IAN.....well down the pecking order, when it comes to getting a new Plastic Heart.
Or,..just maybe,..Marie Antoinette, is looking down at the Poor Huddled Masses of French people....hellbent on Cardiac Self Destruction, with the simple advice, of..
"Let them eat Cake "
Monsieur Tattoue
A votre commande....

...........................you are absolutely right to admonish me on this matter.
Apologies to Acubarry .
The artificial heart news is, for us in the UK, exactly the kind of thing that was predicted ,years ago in the TV programme 'Tomorrows World'..
2014 will doubtless bring even more technology that had been, hitherto, in the realms of fantasy.

Here in Oz we may be a little more portly - but we do play better cricket!!
What the poms need is not so much a new heart - rather a new backbone!
What's that I see on the horizon -
Oh yes a whitewash
Time for another cold beer
Cheers
You know you're wired when...
You take technology to heart.

France fat ? Mais Non !

Bonjour Tattoo man . I don't think that your fat French relatives are typical of the country . If we look at the top fattest nations in the world we see :-
Prevalence of obesity among adults in developed countries (% obese)
Rank Country % That Are Obese
1 Mexico 32.8
2 United States 31.8
3 Syria 31.6
4 Venezuela 30.8
4 Libya 30.8
6 Trinidad & Tobago 30.0
7 Vanuatu 29.8
8 Iraq 29.4
8 Argentina 29.4
10 Turkey 29.3
11 Chile 29.1
12 Czech Republic 28.7
13 Lebanon 28.2
14 New Zealand 27.0
14 Slovenia 27.0
16 El Salvador 26.9
17 Malta 26.6
18 Panama 25.8
18 Antigua 25.8
20 Israel 25.5
21 Australia 25.1
21 Saint Vincent 25.1
22 Dominica 25.0
23 United Kingdom 24.9
23 Russia 24.9
25 Hungary 24.8
I believe that France comes in at under 10 % of their adult population being obese, which is one of life's mysteries in view of all the cheese that they eat.
Apparently Mexico has recently overtaken the US for the number one spot. American citizens are celebrating by eating 10 billion cheeseburgers washed down with Coke; they just hate being in second place
Acubarry, I'm delighted to see that you Australians are slightly fatter than we Brits ; I can't work out why you always seem to beat us at cricket though !
Cheers
Ian
