I love this site as I visit it daily just to keep my dad up to date. He would flip if he knew I worried about him so much lol. In April 2012 he went to OSU Ross heart hospital for CHF. He has had stents, mitral valve repair, etc.. Since 2012 he hasn't been in the hospital, he had Av node ablation and Crt-p implanted. He seems to be doing good. He walks 3-4 times a week on the treadmill he says anywhere from 2.7 mph to 3.4, and up hills etc.. He takes his meds, beta blocker, ace inhibitor, lasix 40 mg, insulin, metaformin, and I am sure there are others. He works Monday through Friday 6 30 am - 2 30 PM. I notice once in a while he coughs as of late. He says he feels good. I was just wondering what the cough could be if he could be a bug, CHF or what. He always said it's not fluid I know what that feels like I couldn't walk one step. Has anyone ever had the Av node and crt put in? *I just need a reminder, a pick me up. I think this cold weather has me in the blues.

ACE inhibitor cough?
by JerryG - 2014-01-06 06:01:58
I think it is great that you care so much about your dad.
ACE inhibitors are notorious for causing coughs. I have taken them in the past and my cardio has changed drugs within the ACE inhibitor group until we found one that both helped control my blood pressure and did not make me cough. My wife who still takes an Ace inhibitor went through the same process.
As TKG says, there are some nasty flu bugs around your area but if those can be ruled out, the ACE inhibitor would be my primary suspect. I guess it may be easier to get the ACE inhibitor changed than to cure the flu :-)

I take an ACE (Lisinopril)

And it does give me a slight dry cough. Some people get swelling of the throat, lips or tongue . I take a vaso dialator in the AM and the ACE in the pm. Very high blood pressure runs in my family and we all develop high bp at an early age (before 30). The ACE has a very good secondary effect in that it protects the kidneys, so a mild dry cough is worth it for those who tolerate it well. The other nice thing is my ACE is on the Target/Wallmart $4 generic list. I wish my other Med was too. Given your dads various issues it sounds like he is active and doing really well. If he says he feels fine try to relax a little.

Youre officially battery-operated.

I am no expert, but I believe that without the defibrillator that I have, I would be dead.
Several things

I'm in the OSU area too. There have been several kinds of flu in the area. They've been mild flu's so you don't really get sick and you really aren't well either.
In October, Riverside hospital had three older people in intensive care because of these mild flu strains. One had gotten a mild flu, slightly recovered and got a second flu. It caused her immune system to attack her body. They had her on a special medications in order to reverse the situation. If the medications didn't work they didn't think she was going to make it.
Two others were in intensive care because of complications from the flu.
Point is, one of these strains causes a lot of drainage in the throat and a lot of coughing.
If the cardiologist doesn't find anything, I'd get him to a doctor who can treat the symptoms.
