Hi all!
I have been training hard for the marathon for the last 3 months and now it's only 2 weeks away I'm getting scared. I know mentally I can do it but just got to make my body do it lol.
Have had a really bad chest infection for 6 weeks and courses of antibiotics so I'm doing a lot better now.
My pacemaker rep is running the same marathon as me so he and my cardiologist have used my training as away to get my settings right. So I've been going in for tweaks every 3 weeks and it's heaps better now.
All my friends and family don't really get what it means to me to run a marathon after only having pm for 5 months but I'm sure you lot can understand. I just want to show them that I can live my life the same as before but better!
So I hope to be letting you all know that I finished in 2 weeks!!

I get you
by gulliver80 - 2012-09-30 05:09:19
Hi Tash,
I totally get you! Listen, I was super active before an ICD implant a year past May, and guess what, I'm still as super active now (whilst I know inside when I need to slow down!) than I was then! Initially my mum sister and friends would be creaking out at the sheer thought of me doing a big cycle, a run - even the first triathlon I completed last Sunday (was amazing!!!) but they also know that unless I am doing the things I love, I'm dead anyway! Just remain positive, in time they too will realise how you achieving such a massive feat will be good for you (if they don't, they don't!) but it's about you doing what makes you happy. Naturally, they will worry, just keep giving them the reassurance that you are all good!
Ps - what time you aiming for? Remember lots if water, gels - (pref not caffeine ones!) and have a blast!
All the best from a rainy Scotland!
Best
Darren
I get you too!

Tash, you should be very proud. I loved running. I used to run many years ago, BC...before children, but then, I had 4 children with the oldest being under 6 years so there was no time. You know, good Irish Catholics...lol. My friends and family didn't get running back then when I was healthy and did not have an ICD...they just weren't physical. The most I ever ran was a half marathon in 2hrs. 5 min. Funny how that sticks with you, so I do understand. Keep us posted.
Darren: I always wanted to do a triathlon, that is so great that you did!! I'm jealous of you guys, keep up the good work.
Best of luck Tash, I get you too.

If you've done all the training you will be just fine ...beat your pacemaker rep if you can !
I envy you having a pacemaker person who runs. The guy who does my pacemaker check-ups is rather obese, and I don't think he comprehends my desire to run marathons again !!
Something to think about at 22 miles :- wise words from a running friend of mine who said " All marathons have one thing in common, they all finish eventually ! "
Cheers
Ian
I love this site!!

Don, your family sound like mine ( dont you think you should be resting, I think your doing to much) and my husband told me last week that he thinks I should only do small runs no longer than 10ks so with that in mind I went for a 32k run and told my running partner that after I do the marathon I'm going to do a ultra marathon lol :) will keep you posted on that one!!
Tatto man, I'm heading out today to grab that book so I can read it before I run. Love your style and will be writing CRAZY AUSSIE CHICK on myself lol :)
We are heading over to America in December for a month and will be doing some running to keep up with my fitness so if you see a chick with CRAZY AUSSIE CHICK down her arms and legs that will be ME!! Lol
Thanks so much to all of you!!

Well done on your first tri Darren! Are you already planing your next one? Lol. Going off my times from my training runs for 30k I think I should do it in about 4 hours. Very slow but since having pm I no longer care much about my times I just live to run lol.
Ian, I love your running friends wise words and will be sharing it with my running friends :)
I don't think I'll be beating my rep his a really fit guy lol
Yes it's great having a rep and a cardiologist that are into fitness. I think it makes a big difference to getting your settings right. I hope you too can get yours right and start running marathons again.
Thanks for your kind words guys!!
Tash
Way to GO!

I understand, also. I'm not a marathoner, but get some of the same crap from family on other issues.
If I hear "what you need is a nap" one more time, I think I'll scream.

The best way to die happy is being nagged by your Pantheon of various kinds of doctors for doing too much.
Enjoy! And report back!

A while back you called yourself a "Crazy Aussie Chick"
If you need a role model (and i'm not sure that you do )..read Born To Run by Chris McDougall..you and Jen and Billy sound like you could be real pals !!
So..
Get a big fat Marker Pen and write Crazy Aussie Chick down your arm,..leg,...wherever !
Do your run and keep an eye on your own words..sure,..as IAN says, at 22 it'll get tough...but keep us in mind, you have a massive support group here.
Let me know when your run is and where and I will write Crazy Aussie Chick down my arm too
I invite all PM Club people to do the same. We could scratch up a Global "Crazy Aussie Chick" support team
C'mon you know you want to !!
Runners, Walkers, both past and present,.. plus all those with PMs can rally around you to give International Support.
Tattoo Man..( did my first 'Half '6 months after open heart valve replacement...it was the lovely Nottingham 'Robin Hood half',..that co-incidentally was run this very morning. ..I didnt do it this year.....I was making Viking Onion Soup ..? )
Tash, we are all with you. Start slow and keep something for the finish. Do keep in touch.
what is your rate response setting?

Hi -
I ran a bunch of marathons before I got heart block, and got a pacer. My Doc didn't realize I had heart flutter as well, and 5 years later I got a new doctor, and had an ablation. Do you know what your doctor did to maximize your running potential? Just curious. I'm not sure if I still tweak things, or If I just need to run more to get into better shape. Good Luck, go for it!!

Keep up the excellent work! Enjoy the moment and the accomplishment! I hope your race goes well and your performance exceeds your expectations!
This is my dream too - I'm scheduled for a 10k in a couple of weeks - the next step on my path to a marathon.
Good luck!
