Electric generator q

I just got an electric generator installed at home. I lose power often in my area since there are lots of old trees and Storm Sandy was a mess. No power for 2-1/2 weeks. Anyway how far do I have to stay away from a 10,000 watt generator with my PM. I'm not going to give it a hug (although I feel like it)...it's outside the house. Will it harm the PM if I get too close.

You gave the correct answer in your question!

Just don't hug it!

Generators are designed to contain the magnetic fields pretty well. It improves their efficiency to do so.

Besides, no brand new baby like yourself should be messing around w/ generators. (see your profile)

Sorry, you cannot hug your generator! A quick hug would be ok if you're really feeling grateful, just don't linger. Inside the house is fine. It's not going to damage the pm if you get too close, worst case it puts you in test mode and you feel a little funky until you step away from it. I don't know what the official rules are but I stay about 5 feet from ours when it's on. When it's not on, I don't worry about it. It's not going to do any damage, if you get close enough to put it in test mode it'll go back to full function as soon as you step away.

Thanks much

Thank you Donr, Tracey and SaraTB....

I'm glad I don't have to fear the one I've learned to love.

No issues from a 17kw one!

We have a stand-by generator outside the house with automatic transfer switch - thank goodness, after three week-long outages in 18 months!

Anyway, no issues for me at all (I'm 100% paced). Good luck - I really recommend having the genny!

You know you're wired when...

You’re officially battery-operated.
