Just read an informative Time Magazine (March 04, 2013 issue) article about why US health care spending is so out of control. In the article, the reporter touched on medical devices and how these are typically marked up 2.5 times the cost.
I gained a better understanding of how my own hospital bill could top $185,000.00 for 2 days stay. You read that correctly, $185K for 2 days hospital stay without any complications and having a CRT-D implanted. The goods news was I have excellent health coverage and my out-of-pocket costs were just $1,400.00.
Everyone should take the time to read this investigative report
on how hospital billing practices could effect you personally.

International Comparisons

Hi HeartofBrick It is interesting to look at different developed countries and compare what percentages of their national wealth ( i.e. GDP ) is spent on healthcare.
The article below says it all. The price of branded drugs in the US is double those in Europe for example...... when you get on to hospital care and implants ; it is apparent that someone along the line is making lots of money from the sick in the US
It seems that the US spends around 18% of its national wealth on healthcare which at first sight is good ,especially as most European countries spend less than 10 %.....but then you must start asking " Are you getting good value for every dollar you spend or are insurance companies and hospitals bleeding you dry ? "

It's only your money at the end of the day.
