You know you're wired when...
You can finally prove that you have a heart.

I have had my pacer since 2005. At first it ruled my life. It took some time to calm down and make the mental adjustment. I had trouble sleeping and I worried a lot about pulling wires. Now I just live my life as I wish.
Escape rhythm

Most of us who are 100% dependent do actually have some rhythm without the PM - it's called an escape rhythm. It's not much - mine is around 30 beats per minute - but enough to keep me alive until I could be moved to a hospital.
You should know that pacemakers are incredibly reliable: the fear of it failing is very common when people first become 100% paced, but it's almost unheard of for it to fail. Before long, we all get used to it and the anxiety goes.
The regular checks of the device will also show how long the expected batty life is. When it gets within around 6 months, it will still work fine, but with a smaller range of functions, to preserve battery, until the doctor can arrange replacement.
During the replacement procedure, they can use an external pacemaker. However, in most cases, the doctors are so quick at reconnecting the leads to the new device it's not needed.
I hope this reassures you, and that over time you will become more comfortable with the reliability of the pacemaker.
