self test
by my4turtles - 2013-01-01 02:01:19
I was just going to say i think its your pm doing a self test.. as you know the times i would ask your Dr or the pacemaker clinic if you ever check in with one what times your om does its self check
Hi,

I'm with Frank. My PM check was set for 6 times a day. It would send a 7V impulse that made my arm jerk. As my PM is on the right hand side and the wires are unipolar, if I had anything in my hand it would come flying out, not to mention I smacked my DH in the middle of the night. It was also very uncomfortable. I started to become a clock watcher.
My EP changed the setting for 4a.m. and shut the other times off. It has helped alot except that I wake up at 4:03 now.
As Frank said, most cardiologists don't know about a PM self check. They can't know everything about them. Even my EP didn't know at the time. But, your PM tech would and should be able to make it more comfortable for you.
GOOD LUCK and don't worry. It's normal.
Best to you and Happy New Year,
Gellia
Pacer Self Test
by ElectricFrank - 2013-01-01 12:01:36
Most pacers have a self test routine that executes on a daily schedule. During the test your HR is forced to several fast and slow beats as you describe. Mine is set to 3:00AM so I rarely notice them. The purpose is to determine the required pacing voltage followed by a test to verify that your heart is responding. It's actually a simple version of the check up that is done in the office.
Your cardiologist's lack of knowledge of this is common. The pacemakers manufacturer's rep would know. It's also described in the pacemaker technical manual.
things I didn't know

Wow...this has happened to me most nights since I received my PM 6 months ago, at 1:17....I didn't know about the self test and will now ask next time I go in. I too thought I was going a bit mad. So many things I was not informed about. This site has been the best support I have found. Thanks Everyone.
You know you're wired when...
