Pre Medication before Dentist

Went to the Dentist today and it's confirmed. Due to my hip replacement, any future Dental procedures: cleanings, fillings, etc. I now have to take 4 horse pills ....2000 mg. of amoxicillin 1 hour before appt. I didn't need this previously for the ICD.

So just a heads up, if anyone has any other implants, check with your Doctor or Dentist to be sure you don't need a pre treatment of antibiotics. He said my teeth are in great shape, so I'm happy I don't need to do that again for another 6 months.

From what was explained to me, the bacteria from dental procedures like to travel to hip and knee implants.

Don't know how they know the difference
from other implants...I guess they are pretty smart :)

Yes, the way it's been going, I was expecting to hear my teeth needed to be replaced....I was starting to see a pattern :0)

............................after I had my new aortic valve in '07 I used to take 3000mg of Amoxicillin before anything as simple as a tooth clean.

A couple of years ago the Dental Profesion and Insurance companies came to an agreement that this was an unneccesary precaution and I no longer take antibiotic cover at all.

I do, however always take the 3000mg and a months course of Amoxicillin with me whenever I travel...just as a kind of insurance should I get an infection / pain when away.

I have a St Judes PM

Tatman: I almost missed your post. I like that idea, keeping some with you when you travel. At this point, what's another 4 pills? :)

HH: I'm not allergic, thank God. I do know of someone who was and she went to the ER....this was many years ago, they gave her Penicillin....she didn't know she was allergic and died.

I'm glad that worked out ok for you.

PreMedication

I too have had a hip repair and have to take Clindamycin 1 hr before procedure (allergic to amoxicillin). When I got my closure device for my ASD I was told would always need to take antibiotic prior to dentist. Now with pacer doc said I need antibiotics so I am covered for all 3. I would prefer to take this precaution once every 6 months then to get infection on one of my implants and get very ill. I have seen it in my work as a nurse

Grateful Heart...

I needed to check with my cardio before my dentist would work on me... cardio said all was fine... did not need the antibiotics...I only have the pm implanted... no other implants...
however, my wife (who does not have a pm by the way) had a hip replacement 20 yrs ago, and the dentist still insists she take antibiotics before any procedure...
I don't think it's a standard policy, but pretty much up to the individual dentist...
glad your check up went so well... :)
