Don't listen to doctors

For 44 years I worked in the field of petroleum construction. ( building and servicing all Hess, Shell, Mobil, Chevron stations.) Everything from the underground gasoline tanks, to the canopy to the car wash, to the pumps,, you have the idea.
After having a heart attack last year and now having an ICD , my doctor said it was time to retire because I just can longer do that type of work any more. So I did retire. Stayed retired for 12 months. Found out being retired is a bunch of bull. As Slim Pickens said in Blazing Saddles, " piss on you " I went back to work, I am using drills, sawzalls, portable band saws, motorized pipe threaders, climbing ladders, and using a manlift, also working with LIVE voltage. Guess what, I have never felt better. Took a little bit of time to get back into the swing of things after a year off, but so much for what the doctors say about power tools.

Always question your Dr !

Hi conchfm I'm glad that you're back doing the things that turn you on !

I guess we have to listen to doctors some of the time; you must have listened to the Dr who told you that you needed an ICD.......but you make a very good point about some of the crap advice which some Drs give out.

We are lucky that we now have the internet and it is so easy to research our own medical conditions and challenge Drs. I am amazed on here to read the different recommendations given out by Drs on a simple thing like when it is safe to drive after a PM.

I think it often boils down to the simple fact that Drs are no different to the rest of us in their range of personalities :-

-- some are ultra-conservative, some are risk takers

-- some are couch potatoes, some are into exercise and sport

-- some are against alcohol, some enjoy a drink

... and the list goes on !

I believe that much of the advice which Drs give us reflects their personalities rather than logical thinking !!

In my GP practice there are 5 Drs .I chose one whose personality and interests match my own and it works out well. I guess if you'd found a Dr whose hobbies are using motorized pipe threaders and climbing ladders then he would have been far more sympathetic .

Glad that things have turned out well for you.

powertool craving

by Frikkie - 2012-11-14 07:11:56

i grew up on the farm and working with powertools was part of growing up.

When i got my pm the doc told me that i could not use a welding machine or my favourate tools any more...

A few years later i could not resist the powertool craving anymore. I never had a problem with a tool not working with my pm.

I'm glad that you're back doing the things you enjoy.

Something new

by conchfm - 2012-12-19 08:12:40

First it was working with POWER tools again without problems. Another first yesterday, started cutting my grass again, riding mower- push mower-weed eater- edger- back pack blower. Tied but did good. No problems.

You know you're wired when...

You have rhythm.
