Strange feeling in throat

Hi all,

I have a pacemaker due to heart block caused by a combination of TGA, VSD and pulmonary stenosis, and the surgeries I've had to repair these. I got my pacemaker in August 2009. In the last 6 months or so I've been getting a weird feeling in my throat, just near the top of the breast-bone but more towards the left, where my pacemaker is. It feels like something is pressing on my throat, like you might feel if you're wearing a tight jumper and sometimes it feels like my throat muscles are tightening. I can swallow fine and eat and drink normally, and have no other symptoms, heart-related or otherwise. The feeling comes on and off for a few weeks at a time then goes away and comes back a few months later. It seems to get worse as the day goes on.

Has anyone else experienced similar? I don't really know if it's to do with the pm or not, but I might make an appt. with the pacing clinic anyway.

I should have said really it feels like someone is pressing on the my throat - the feeling is more severe than a tight jumper. It's quite hard to explain, sorry!

Any help gratefully received, thanks...

You have certainly been through a lot, and yes you certainly need a check up asap. Have you ever had your thyroid gland tested? If enlarged, that can cause a feeling of pressure on the throat. In any case your symptoms may not be related to your pm, so a check up with your doctor would be a good idea.
All the best, let us know how you go.

Well, I went to my GP today and she basically said she doesn't know what it is! I said could it be the thyroid and she dismissed that without considering it at all! She said to take paracetomol and I explained it's not pain but a feeling of pressure (several times), but she still said to take it. I can't see that that would do any good! Anyway, I was a bit upset by having it dismissed when it is actually quite distressing when it's bad.

It seems better now, but I will mention it at my next pacing check-up. If it comes back before then I'll make an appointment at the pacing clinic and will also ask to see another GP at the surgery.

Thanks for your help.

I finished 29th in London in 2 hours 20 minutes 30 seconds which is my fastest with or without a device so clearly it didn’t slow me down ! I had no problems apart from some slight chaffing on my scar - more Vaseline next time.
