Surgery

Hello all. My 2yr. old son will be going next week for his pacemaker surgery. I just wanted to see if there is anyone with young children who have undergone this surgery and have any helpful hints. Obviously, he is too young to understand what will take place. If there is anything that anyone can share about helping to get a young child through this, helpful hints, or things to know about recovery, I am all ears and would greatly appreciate any words of wisdom. Thank you in advance!

Hi Rebecca, I just sent you a private message to help with gathering info as I just had my 6th implant done in my belly by a EP Specialist who does most children in our area.

I am a man born with third-degree congenital heart block in 1992. I had my first pacemaker implanted when I was 8 days old. I am now 21 years old and have had 4 implants in total. One of my surgeries occurred when I was two, just like your son. Because I never knew life without a pacemaker, it never was a big deal to me. I didn't understand that it wasn't normal. I didn't understand that not every kid got to miss school to go to the cardiologist. It was easy. I wanted to play contact sports though and I couldn't, that was a bummer. I'm currently a senior in college and live a completely normal and happy life. Unfortunately I cannot give you specific advice as to what to do with him, because I cannot remember what my own mother did with me, but I just wanted to let you know that it, and he, will be okay.

You know you're wired when...

Like the Energizer Bunny, you keep going.

I am just now 40 but have had these blackouts all my life. I am thrilled with the pacer and would do it all over again.
