Hi Duke,

We got about 4 inches last Tuesday.

OK Kag!

You really know how to rub it in.

My friend lives in AZ and he was remarking how lovely the weather is too!

Then there's the SW

The forecast is for 80 deg F by the end of the week. Flowers are blooming.....birds building nests, crazy stuff in the US. I stopped calling my relatives in Minnesota to tease them, to cruel.

We are expecting an ice storm tonight here at the South Carolina coast. Inland from here they may see 4-6 inches of the white stuff I escaped from Massachusetts. Some of my pipes already froze up earlier in the week, Can't imagine what will happen when the power goes out as expected later!

-12 this morning before wind chill. I wish I was still in Arizona. Can't wait to come back next January for some more of that fabulous sun and the 13 mile block party. Hopefully I won't leave in a wheelchair next time!
More snow coming in Thur. Sippable chocolate, a basket of knitting, watching snow fall in my woods, and a cozy blanket. It's all good. But sun is better.

Hi Guys !..........

.........over here in the UK you are lucky if the weather is merely vile..

If you are unlucky then, ..like some 300,000 people over here then you have been flooded out ...again...

Hey !...don't feel sorry for us because ,as Don will tell you we are almost certainly out in the streets singing WW2 songs and taking cakes round to the poor...oh,.and making buckets of sweet tea...

Yeah..in your dreams !...Mrs TM and I live in the country,. and the lanes are so mucky that its pointless to wash the car..the ideal form of transport here, right now is either a Hummer or a Boat...

Actually,..thinking about it....and Don will be with me here..maybe a WW2 Amphibian would be ideal..

So...between Arizona and S Carolina you have the lot...I wish you all well..be it with your struggling Air-Con or your struggling blowlamps.

Just as well that PMs are not temperature sensitive or the Carolina Contingent would all look like snowmen and the Arizonans would spontaneously combust !!

I am stopping right here..heaven knows..it could be a lot worse....

Best wishes to all in PMC Land..

Hey, Tat Man...

by donr - 2014-01-28 05:01:33

I'll be there, complete w/ my steel dishpan on my head. I'll substitute that for my wife's aluminium collander I usually wear to keep the NSA from sending me subversive orders via radio waves.

If you need it, I know a guy here who has a WW-II Ferrett he'll lend us to make the rounds. Even has a dummy Bren or Sten Gun to go with it. You take your choice.

You would not believe what I saw today in our local COSTCO! Some old WW-II vet riding in an electric scooter & wearing a cap saying "Army Air Corps" on it. I haven't seen or heard anyone call it that in years. Went up & talked to him & he turned out to be a waist gunner/radio operator on a B-26 in North Africa & then in England.

I have NEVER met any man who flew in one of those birds. I have known men who flew in every other US aircraft used, but never that one.

Hey, be glad to help out. I can make a mean pot of tea. As I recall, you Brits like it strong enough so it will strip paint. I can handle that. Even bring a supply of biscuits. Most likely imported from the UK & left over from the Christmas stock at COSTCO.

Cheers.

The Great Blizzard of 2014

by donr - 2014-01-28 05:01:53

Is hitting Atlanta, GA. The accidents are piling up so fast that they can't count them. Cobb County, just Nawthwest of the city had 30 at one report & 20 more in the next 10 min.

We live Nawth of the center of the city, about halfway to Chattanooga, TN. It has snowed here about two hours & we have all of 2 inches. There is not a loaf of bread, a roll of TP, a gallon of milk or - near tragedy - a can of beer left in any store. All the residents are hunkering down for the duration.

We are well set - 12 rolls of TP in an un-opened package, 2 gallons of milk, at least two loaves of bread and two small watermelons.

For nostalgia, I have a book of Robert W. Service poetry about his days in Alaska, & will read aloud "The SHooting of Dan McGrew," "The Cremation of Sam McGee," (Who was from Plum Tree down in Tennessee) And all the other tales of the midnight lights, blizzards, mushing the Dawson Trail & the arctic prostitutes.

Wait a minit - I just saw Sgt Preston of the RCMP going through our front yard, urging his great dog "King" & the rest of his team of huskies onward - obviously on the trail of some miscreant; most likely "Black Jack Shellac."

My hearing aids must be failing - I'd swear I heard him yelling "Hush you muskies." Nah, that couldn't be.

While we're on lousy puns, any of you Canucks ever see the TV show about the Mountie who had a dog that liked potatoes? It was called "Husky & Starch." Groaaaaaaaan.

I can see the cabin fever starting to set in already. Wife is already eyeing the rifle - wonder what her intentions are.

No snow yet in Queensland Australia +29c

by Bostonstrong - 2014-01-28 09:01:16

Bread, milk, and toilet paper? No wonder your wife is eyeing that rifle. Chocolate, wine, more chocolate, and a little extra chocolate are storm essentials.

Absolutely Chocolate!

by Casper - 2014-01-28 10:01:12

Chocolate has always been Number 1 on my list.

Hey Don!

by Casper - 2014-01-28 11:01:55

Don!!!

My father was a gunner/radio operator (morse code detector) on a B-26.

Speaking of WW II songs, my father loved Dame Vera Lynn who sang for all the boys at this time in history.

He would play a lot of her songs.

I'm glad you went up to that man and started talking with him.

Casper

Sorry guys/gals in USA you are

getting our weather. Here in Anchorage it has been warm & almost everything is melted. Today, as usual this month, has been in the 30's F. Down to the 20's at night. Denali Park reports that a temp of 52 F was warmest they have been in over 90 yrs. Really not good here when lot of winter sports, etc affected.

Sure it will change after awhile in the mean time be careful out there.

Wish we had snow

by Dasser - 2014-01-29 03:01:34

No snow hear in Bright, Victoria, Australia the next seven day forecast are all days over 40 Celsius which would be around 104 Fahrenheit and up to 43C later in the week.

Berlin

by golden_snitch - 2014-01-29 04:01:37

It's 19°F at the moment, and we have about 3 - 4 inches of snow.

Inga

You think you've got problems !

by IAN MC - 2014-01-29 05:01:13

One of our local golf courses has been closed for 3 weeks because of floods ! All you can see are the tops of 18 flags sticking out of a lake ! All fellow golfers will appreciate that this is far more serious than your other tales of woe and tiny inconveniences !

I never believed in climate change but now that my golf is being affected I am going to take it seriously . Now where did I put those flippers ?

Cheers

snow and heat

by Alma Annie - 2014-01-29 05:01:48

Here, south of Adelaide, South Australia, like Dasser, heat waves up to 46 Celsius, which is about 114.8 Fahrenheit. I put my thermometer out into the back yard, but at 49.8 Celsius it stopped working and sort of 'flatlined' No power stoppage here, but in many suburbs have been rolling stoppages, so no air conditioning for them. I must admit though I prefer a heatwave to your terrible cold snow , ice and all that goes with it!!
Alma Annie

Oh you poor UK residents...

by Bostonstrong - 2014-01-29 06:01:17

I will arrange for chocolate and wine airdrops for you. Maybe Donr can help with this using military tactics, as soon as that statewide traffic jam in Georgia subsides. And our fingers thaw out.

Ice

by Bostonstrong - 2014-01-29 07:01:32

I have more than enough to share with our Oz friends. But we have to get it there quickly. It was double digits above zero today and the sun came out, causing extreme giddiness. Spent my day healing the ill and planning travel to warmer places. Counting the days until California...

Help w/ the Chocolate

by donr - 2014-01-29 07:01:36

Boston: I'll intercept Sgt Preston as he heads Nawth w/ his miscreant strapped to his sled. He can haul the Chawklet to you up in banana blooming country. Probably tomorrow.

Actually, I have a case of Dehydrated ice cubes we can send to our Aussie friends trying to make us feel jealous. This could turn into a double edged charitable effort for disaster relief. MOF, you can run out in the driveway & scrape up some more of your ice to send to Oz.

Hey, Alma, et al - give us an address...

I spent my day sitting around in my Jammies & bunny slippers, watching snow try to melt in single digit temps. Alternately staring out the window, watching for Ian's three clergymen struggling to do severe bodily damage to a Charmin Blue Bear as they try to save its mortal soul & working on a bunch of stuff I've been putting off. Can no longer complain about lack of time!

I've been tempted to run through a chorus or two of that old "Pogo" favorite, "Deck us all with Boston Charlie," but cannot remember any of the words beyond the title.

Food....

by ohiolaura - 2014-01-29 08:01:35

I go for the chocolate, although health wise, the milk and bread is a wiser choice, and of course the TP then is a necessary commodity to have.........need to add cheeses to the list, must have in my fridge!
Chips and salsa also, esp with Superbowl coming up.....

From Ohio

by ohiolaura - 2014-01-29 08:01:51

Were at -20 with the wind,no new snow, have maybe 6 in on ground, had a ton of drifting over the weekend, which brought in a crazy weather oddity, called "snow rollers".
Never in my 50 yrs of Ohio living have I seen this, but theyre wind driven snow that actually turns into balls, which almost have a hole in the center, some like a tire or a donut, and theyre quite firm.
Have some about basketball size, others small like grapefruits, really cool, but odd.
Were supposed to be about +14 for todays high, hope were ready for a heat wave! When my little terrier went out this am to do what she must,on her way in,she was trying to hop on 3 legs and was crying,as her pads on her feet must have been burning from the cold, had to pick her up and slowly rub her toes, poor baby!
Stay warm everyone,I know you southerners aren't equipped for the cold and snow as we are, stay safe, and it will end, eventually!
Laura
Brrrrrrrrr:)

Anyone out there recall the...

by donr - 2014-01-29 11:01:49

...Great Blizzard of Jan 79 in the American Midwest? Came in January. Chicago made all the headlines, but I was down in the SE corner of Iowa right on the Mississippi River. We got about 3 feet (A meter for the Europeans) of the snow in the initial blast when the snow was falling vertically. Then the winds came up from the NW, w/ nothing between us & the North Pole except three strands of barbed wire. We got drifts against buildings that ran from the ground up to the top ridge of the roofs. Buildings were completely snowed under. Took a big front loader w/ a multi- cubic yard bucket to dig the way in to the doors. Temps went below zero Fahrenheit.

On the installation where I was, we had over 100 miles of RR tracks we had to clear of multi feet of snow. We borrowed a RR snow blower that fit the front of a diesel locomotive from another installation several hundred miles to the west in the middle of Nebraska. Took us a week to plow out, once we got the snow blower.

Anyone recall the great Blizzard of '88? That's 1888, NOT 1988. I recall my grandmother always talking about that one.

God help anyone who runs out of TP in a situation like this. We no longer have Sears Catalogs.

After listening to Tattoo and Don I'm glad its 31 below (no wind chill) tonight, no icky mud or huskies in the yard. How lucky can we be up here in the arrowhead of Minnesota, after all we're getting a warm spell,,the rest of the week days will be way up to3 and 4.

So..how about us planning a Global Coup..?...

So....IDEAS for survival under extreme duress....

May I kick off with an idea..??...when you run out of Toilet Paper....'TP' in Dons military speak..that is when you turn to the next best thing...and we all have tons of the stuff, in the absence of a Sears Robuck catalogue, we may finally realise what Yellow Pages was invented for....

For myself, spending some time in a freezing..Lav..John..Dunny..Restroom can only be improved by turning the pages till you reach...

Michigan

by valley01 - 2014-01-30 08:01:05

93" so far this winter but it's the cold and wind that is the real problem because the roads are pure ice and it's too cold for the salt to work and visibility is bad. I have a 40 mile drive to work every day and have not missed a day yet. If you read and believe the Farmer's Almanac (which has been accurate so far this winter) we still have February and March to get through and they are both supposed to be bad.

Tat man

by Bostonstrong - 2014-01-30 08:01:55

No yellow pages as I don't have a land line. I do however have a hospital phone book with numbers of the execs and administrators.
Is Bossy Strong a reference to cows? Heifers? The piled on pounds that occur as a result of being cooped up in a frozen wasteland for months on end with a vast stockpile of chocolate and no where to run? Still choosing chocolate over bread and milk. Ran out of milk and found out my sippable dark chocolate from Cacao in Atlanta is actually better when it's not diluted by milk. You can eat this straight from the bag! By the handful! Amazing! My supplier is leaving Atlanta but its only a 10 hour drive. I will need to restock before the global coup.
More snow coming in tomorrow.

In the middle of another...

by donr - 2014-01-31 01:01:59

...day in jammies & bunny slippers.

Temps are going to reach the 50's this afternoon after the teens last night. then the banananananas (got a little overzealous w/ the "an" combo there at the end) will be in bloom while the temps get into the 60's over the weekend.

Another solution to the absence of a Sears catalog is LL Bean catalogs, Would take a whole bunch of them, however to match one Sears. HOWEVER: Buy one thing from Grainger, the industrial supply guys & you can get one of their 5000 page behemoths. That should take you through a "Winter Over" tour in the Antarctic. That one is even printed on thinner paper.

Our real problem is getting up & down the shaded hills leading from our house in the wilderness to "Civilization." The shaded areas are not melting at all & are still slicker'n an eel dipped in olive oil.

Tat Man - you forgot the "Loo" in your list of facilities. Back in the days, we had outdoor facilities that were called "Chick sale." Dunno why, but it was considered great sport in locales w/ the crescent mooned doors for kids on Halloween night to drag them from back yards & put them on people's front porch.

I am trying to finish up some onerous work toward a local alumni association project. Been working on it between PMC comments that MUST be written first. Today has been hectic, what w/ the emphasis on Sears Catalogs & Crystal & her shenanigans.

Wife has made it known that I am expected to treat the Hot Tub w/ chemicals to keep it from smelling like Shreck's halitosis. She went out this AM & said she could smell the water from 6 ft away - NOT GOOD!

Then I have to fix the sound system foir the TV & clean up my mess around the treadmill I repaired.

See what retirement is REALLY like!

Get out of those bunny slippers and Jammie's and get moving! Snow and ice, albeit a great excuse to increase chocolate consumption, is NOT an excuse to sit around in your jammies!

Are you kidding?

I'm a bunny slippers guy (Male variety of Guy). Sorta like Jon in Garfield .

W/ the ears on the front, eyes staring up at me.

Disarms people, so I can bore in for their throats in a surprise move.

Ever see the movie "A Christmas Story"? That's what my jamies look like - snuggy & warm on a cold winter day.

Off to clean up some messes I've left the last few weeks in the living room.
