playing with magnets

Hi, I had a small scare yesterday when my 9 year old (who has had his PM for a year and a half) told me last night he was feeling funny near his PM. He said it felt like little shocks, although he couldnt really describe it very well. He had been playing with a magnet set that someone gave him for his birthday. I had told him not to put it near his chest, although it was just a kid's toy, not industrial strength magnets!! Does anyone have any ideas on this? Could it be related? I was a bit afraid it was the power of suggestion as I had told him just in case to be careful. We decided to put the toy away for a bit and see how it goes. Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks! With kids, it's hard to tell! A single toy magnet shouldn't cause problems, but a set of them? Might be strong enough to have an effect. When in doubt, I'd put it away.

If the magnets were to affect his pm, it would not be little shocks but rather the same feeling we get when it's tested. It's still working but not fully functional so we would feel dizzy, sometimes like when an elevator is coming to a stop. Second, if it was the toys, any odd feelings would stop as soon as he got more than 6" from them. The affect is temporary and harmless.

It's hard to tell. I've been around magnets that didn't bother me at all. Yet, I was given a purse that bothered me (felt dizzy, etc., like when the PM is tested by a PM tech, not sharp pains). I didn't even realize the purse had a magnet in it, so it wasn't power of suggestion there at all. It wasn't a Miche purse (those don't bother me, even with magnets in them), but a general brand purse from a department store that had a strong maget instead of a snap closure. I experimented with it several times before I had the magnet removed. Once I did, it never bothered me again.

I also had a problem with one of those silver teflon covered quilted clothes dryer covers that has numerous strong magnets in it. In both cases, I started feeling weird right away. In both cases, I didn't even have the item that close to my chest when I started feeling bad, but was holding them in front of me close to the middle of my body about waist level.

Again, I've held other things with magnets that didn't bother me at all, so it must depend on how strong the magnets are, what type they are, how many they are, etc.

If he says he doesn't feel well when he's around anything or playing with something, wheter he knows there are magnets there or not, have him get away from whatever it is, just to be safe.

Best wishes for the little guy!

Thank you both for your comments. I ended up calling the hospital the next day and they told me to bring him right in. They did a check on the PM and found no evidence of any strange PM activity (except a brief episode in July that no one noticed!!), their verdict was that the toy created a magnetic field that caused some sort of a short circuit, giving him little twangs- like small muscle contractions. So for now I have put the toy away. I think it made him a little sad because it reminded him that very occasionally he has limitations, but the good news is that he is fine. Thanks for caring and Happy Thanksgiving!! Sharon
