LVF ??

Hi had a PM for about 15 years and recently had a short stink in hospital with chest pain (no problem found) but a nurse mentioned that I have mild LVF, is this anything to do with my heart block or pacemaker ?? I have been discharged from hospital with the same meds as I normally take BB only 8mg.
I am a bit worried that they didn't find out why I had chest pain and I don't know anything about LVF CAN ANY ONE ADVISE PLEASE.

Maureen

Heart failure?

by golden_snitch - 2014-06-20 05:06:19

Hi Maureen,

could it be that she was meaning "left ventricular failure"? I don't think that term is used often, but the abbreviation LVF would fit.

If you have a dual-chamber pacemaker and have a good percentage of ventricular pacing, the heart failure and the pacemaker could indeed have to do with one another. Several studies have shown that right ventricular (apical) pacing can lead to heart failure. The reason is that by pacing only the right ventricle, this side contracts a little earlier than the left side. It's this dyssynchrony that causes the heart failure. In patients who suffer from this complication, putting in a bi-ventricular pacemaker with a third lead pacing the left ventricle, restores the synchrony and therefore stops the heart failure. Many patients treated with this experience that their heart pumps better again, or at least does not get worse.

If I were you, I'd make an appointment with your cardio and get an echo done. Maybe he can also talk to whoever treated you at the hospital.

Best wishes

Inga is right, but bi-V is still not natural because it bypasses the native cardiac conduction system. The literature finds 10 to 15 times greater cardiac muscle fiber strain away from the electrode than at the electrode site in the heart. Hearts exhibit fatty deposits and calcification, along with myofibril disarray and other problems related to heart failure due to bypassing the conduction system. Please see the website I mentioned above.
