Magnesium

Elleninminn: you might be the gullible one! Most doctors will run a blood test, but blood serum test can results can be misleading. The body must keep serum levels within a tight range, or the heart stops. Consequently, serum levels are maintained at the expense of levels inside cells. Subsequently, essential minerals can appear normal in the blood and be deficient within the cell.

Magnesium deficiencies range range from 50% to 68% in the general populations In the US. An imbalance or deficiency of minerals like Magnesium, potassium, and calcium can force the heart into arrhythmias. So why don't you do some research before you call people gullible?

... for your reply. I was pleased to see the wording in your original post where you referred to " an IMBALANCE or a deficiency " . I become cynical when everything is claimed to be caused by a deficiency ; the alarm bells ring and I assume somebody is trying to sell something to cure that deficiency.

I guess an "imbalance" could mean that some people have too much magnesium and some people too little ?

I'm sure that it is still not clearly understood how sodium, calcium , magnesium and potassium levels inter-relate and what their effects on the heart are.

I remember some of your past posts and I am delighted that increasing your magnesium intake seems to prevent your A-fib, and I hope that your advice may help some other people .... BUT it certainly won't be the answer for everybody and I still doubt that 68 % figure .

At the risk of sounding slightly crazy ( which my wife really thinks I am ) I genuinely think that my heart does better when I eat a couple of bananas a day ; so maybe I have a potassium deficiency . I am a keen runner and a banana before I set off seems to help my performance
no end.

Tell me more, Roys !

i am fascinated by the science and the statistics.

If blood tests give misleading results how can anyone arrive at the statistic that there are magnesium deficiencies in up to 68% of the US population ?

Is it just possible that people selling magnesium supplements may be behind some of these scary statistics ?

Tests for Magnesium

by Roys - 2013-11-04 07:11:13

Hi Ian
No it is not put out by people selling magnesium. A more revealing test measures at the intracellular levels ( such as the EXAtest ) or the red cell magnesium test (RBC ) is another recommended option. Likewise, over 98% of body Potassium is intracellular.

Most US adults ingest only about 270 mg of magnesium a day, well below the modest recommended daily allowance of 420mg for adult males.

This info comes from a book by Steve S. Ryan,PhD
