Could a faulty lead cause pericardial effusion?

I had a dual chamber pacemaker implanted in 2002. They replaced it in 2008. The last year the upper lead is starting to become suspect so they are watching it. I woke up early Wednesday morning and it was very painful to breath in. I had pericarditis and pericardial effusion. They drained a quart of very bloody fluid from around the heart. My question is: Could this be caused by the faulty lead? Has any one else experienced this? Thanks so much!!

My eight year old son had a pacemaker since he was 6 months old. He does very well, plays soccer, baseball, and rides his bike. I am so glad he is not ashamed of his pacemaker. He will proudly show his "battery" to anyone.
