Amiodarone

Good afternoon,

Has anyone been on long term Amiodarone?

If so, have you experience any significant side effects?

For example, lung or breathing issues?

I'm allergic

I'm allergic. They gave it to me while I was in a coma. Woke up a bright yellow. I'm talking egg yolk yellow. It took several days to get rid of the color.

As for other side effects, I'm not sure.

Hope someone can give you some insight.

Go into " Search" , top right hand corner, and put in amiodarone. The have been lots of posts in the past re amiodarone side-effects particularly the lung and breathing issues.

I was on Amiodarone (200 mg daily) from early 2011 until early this year after my CRT-D was implanted. The only problem I had was darkening of my skin that was exposed to sunlight - and this was probably partially my fault for failing to use plenty of sunscreen.. It is beginning to fade, but it takes a long time for the drug to get out of your system.

Amioderone for almost 2 years now

The first 6 months are the hardest. I was on 400mg per day as a "loading dose" and it was torture. Lost 45 pounds, and developed some sort of secondary polycythemia vera (had to get bled every 2-3 weeks due to high Hb and Hct). Got an enlarged spleen too. After that went on 200 mg per day and started to be able to eat after 3:00 p.m. again. Definitely get your liver enzymes and a CBC ever month or so. A thyroid check would also be very recommended because I also developed a Amioderone Induced Hypothyroidism due to the massive (50X the RDH of iodine) screwing up my thyroid gland. I was running TSH's in the low teens! Amioderone can be handled for a long time if you know what to look for and monitor.
