Thinning Hair

Good morning,

Has anyone experienced thinning hair while on Amiodarone?

I've been taking it for 6 months...along with Carvedilol and Lorsartan. Google tells me that thinning of the hair is definitely a side effect of Amiodarone.

Does it ever return to normal??? Is there anything one can do to offset the thinning???

Prior to March of this year, I had a full head of hair and still do, but it's thinning fast.

Just curious if others have had similar experiences.

Thanks!

Ron

Hi Ron,

I don't take those name of meds but I do take a beta blocker and an ace inhibitor, both of them say about thinning hair and it's true mine is leaving home fast.

Even though i'm nearly sixty before three years ago (got my pacemaker) my hair was so thick and still very dark. It's still very dark but there's not much of it left.

I'm afraid I've not tried to remedy it I've just accepted it.

All the best Ron.

P.S. if you find a magic potion please let us know.

I see from your profile you have had a defib since 2009. Can I ask why they put you on Amiodarone in March?

I had a defib implant July 3/13. I took 1200 mg of Amiodarone for several weeks and they have since kept reducing the dosage. I am now at 200 mg per day for five days a week and by the end of September I will be off of it all together. Dr. also said my defib may be more active but that was better than taking the Amiodarone.

I am also on Carvedilol. I had no idea until your post that hair thinning was a side effect of the Amiodarone so thank you for the post because I also researched and saw that the side effects of Amiodarone lasts for months after taking it. My hair is quite thick and haven't noticed a change but if it happened later and I was off the drug I might have thought it was something else.

Another interesting thing I found: Amiodarone (Cordarone) may increase carvedilol levels in the blood, increasing the effects and potential for toxicity of carvedilol.

Maybe something to discuss with your doctor or were you already aware of this?
