Happy Fourth of July!
I'm considering moving from Colorado to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida to be closer to a Mayo Clinic and am a bit concerned how I'll cope with the heat and humidity.
My doctor says it won't matter.
Does anyone have any thoughts or personal preferences they'd like to share???
Thanks alot,
Ron

Miami, FLA - UGH!!!!!!!!!
by donr - 2013-07-04 06:07:07
Ron: I lived in Miami from 1947 until 1955. Then went away to college in New York. Realize that I lived there BEFORE residential central AC was even thought of; before room A/C was common. I have two sisters who live in FLA. One is a 12 mo resident of Titusville (Cape Canaveral). The other splits her time between Ocala & Hendersonville, NC. 5 Mo in Ocala & 7 in NC.
I hated the heat & humidity - could NOT wait to get out of it. IMNSHO, FLA has two seasons - Blazing summer & 1 January.
I will not go back except during the winter months. the rest of the time, you run from an AC house to an AC car to an AC Mall, etc.
Before making any rash decisions, visit where you want to try to live for a couple weeks to see if you can tolerate it. Being from the top of the world in CO, you might not like it!
Don
Tracey & I hold contrary opinions on FLA. Fortunately she likes it, so that's one less person who will crowd the cooler regions of the US.
Heat and Humidity

Thanks everyone for taking the time to share your opinions and experience...they were just what I needed to hear.
I think I'll go back to the drawing board, take a closer look
and take my time making a decision.

Mayo

If the Mayo Clinic is your main reason for considering the move, I would suggest you check out the Mayo in Phoenix. I hear it's a highly rated facility and it would be a shorter move to a place with a lot less humidity. I, for one, couldn't stand Florida's humidity, but thank goodness many people like it or they might here LOL
It Doesn't Matter

The PM is durable under most climate conditions. Heat and humidity is no problem. It's whether you will adjust to the climate change. It takes awhile to adjust to a hot sticky climate compared to a cold dry climate. Give it time. Normally it takes at least a year to adjust to heat and humidity.

I've lived in FL 21 years now. I was hot all the time the first year, then bodies adapt. I used to only wear a coat if it was snowing, and that was mostly to keep dry not to keep warm, but now I'm bundling if it gets under 60. Yes, you turn into a wimp when you live here for long. Our summers are no worse than anywhere else, the only difference is it lasts for 6 months and it never gets too cold the other 6 months. How do we cope? Air conditioning! We never go out in it lol. I only run or walk the dogs early morning or in the evening. I plan camping trips for winter. If I go out in summer during the day, it's usually a pool or the beach.
When my grandmother moved here, her arthritis got considerably better being in the heat/humidity. That wasn't why she moved, but it was a pleasant surprise.
Just my opinion, but if you have decent care where you are, that's not a reason to move. There are a lot of reasons to live here, it's great and I don't regret moving at all, but proximity to health care imo is down on the list unless perhaps you have need of frequent very specific care that you can only get there. Beaches, golf, fishing, boating, water sports, ability to be outside and active year round, it's a fun lifestyle. Where do I go for vacation at least once a year? The mountains! In a perfect world, I'd spend Oct-April here, May-Nov at my parents' place in the mountains.
