Ablate this
by ebfox - 2013-04-19 06:04:11
Hi Avril,
I have to tell you that I got a chuckle from your post. Asking a bunch of PM folks if they ever heard of ablation is about like asking a bunch of Baptists if they ever heard of prayer-
My ablation was 9/11/09 and it lasted about 5 hours. It did not fix my afib. Two years later I had a similar procedure called a mini-maze that did fix my afib but it blew away my sinus node in the process.
As Selwyn says, there are lots of different kinds of ablations. Be sure to go to an EP that has done at least 200 of them (you should ask him how many he has done). There are doctors out there that have done 10000 of them- go to an experienced doctor.

Selwyn I am scheduled on Tuesday for ablation surgery for PVST becoming scared to death but excited to get it over and start feeling "normal" again if there's such a thing.

Hi. Yes, I've had 3 ablations. What would you like to know? I'll be happy to help if I can.
Best wishes
Janey

I'm in the ablation club. You certainly won't be the first to have it done !
It really is a piece of cake and if successful ( which mine was ) it will get you back into sinus rhythm ... far better than taking drugs for the rest of your life which was the alternative for me.
But you didn't give much away about your reasons for having it done.
Best of luck
Ian

Different Types of Ablation Surgery
by Selwyn - 2013-04-19 05:04:22
You need to be more specific! Different types of surgery have different complication rates- it depends on the area being zapped.
I had a atrial flutter ablation some months ago ( this involves the area around the tricuspid valve). It is usually very successful and without complications, as in my case.Takes about 90 mins ( either general anaesthetic or not, though can be painful).
