When to avoid hospitals ?

Some fascinating data has come out of Harvard Medical School and has been published in the Journal of the American Heart Association :-

They have found that heart attack patients are more likely to survive when senior cardiologists are  away at conferences and are NOT in the hospital . When the senior doctors aren't there the survival rate at their hospitals actually improves !

It is suggested that specialists, when they are there,  are more likely to do gung-ho...

Last to Know

I'm sure Gotrhythm and MartyP know they didn't do anything wrong.  It was all in jest while the site was/ is semi-down.  (Sigh)

It's getting harder and harder to joke around these days on this site.  Laughter is good medicine!!

BTW Ian....I've heard that too!

Weight & Workout

I received my pacemaker February 13, 2018. I was wondering if weight is easier to mainain after a pacemaker? How careful do you have to be working out and for how long? I just had my bandage removed a week ago. They said I could run, but not to really swing arms yet. I don't see my doctor until May. But really excited to get back to activity! I don't know how I did anything this last yr before my pacemaker!

The site is being glitchy today and won't let me reply to your post or send you a private message.

Theoretically they are stitched into place and don't move, but it's not uncommon. It can take up to a year for them to settle in fully. It's not dangerous and usually they leave it up to us if it's bad enough for them to go in and fix it. My newest one shifted and sometimes catches on the edge of my workout bra. It's more annoying than painful so I decided not...

ICD has moved

Hello everyone,

I received my ICD/pacemaker after I had multiple episodes of heart block, low HR and the diagnosis of Brugada - rare genetic condition associated with VT and sudden cardiac death. I’m much better now, and have had my ICD for 9 months now, however over the past few weeks I have noticed that my ICD has moved lower, closer to my armpit almost in my breast. It also moves noticeably with exercise along with some pain, it feels like sore muscles in that area. S...

OK to be wanded

Ok I've had my PM a year this past September. I went to the courthouse today. They had the walkthrough thing. Hadn't had to do this and couldn't remember what I had read about it  So I told the three policemen that I had a PM. They instructed me to walk around and said they would wand me. I was pretty sure I had read on here we weren't supposed to do that. One of the police said if I didn't do that they would have to pat me down. I said, " Well do what you have t...

Arm Inflammation/Swelling

Hello fellow bionics!

I've had my dual-chamber pacemaker implanted in November 2010 at 16 years old. Fortunately, I am still on my first implant.. and healthy! I've been inquiring about a particular cosmetic complication for a few years now, and decided to join this forum to see if anyone else has experienced this for YEARS like myself! I work out at the gym, do yoga, and eat right (most of the time) but for as long as I can remember my left arm, PM side, is significantly l...

Maybe Occupation induced illness

Hello everyone.

I work for a huge telecommunications company, maybe the biggest in Canada!

I have worked in that building for the last 37 years.

The company has many many buildings some bigger some smaller. The one I work in is the main hub. The biggest.

The building is 15 stories high with 2 or 3 sub basements.

Each floor is JAMMED FULL with thousands of pieces of equipment that provides phone/internet/cable services to its customers.

In the b...

Father with pacemaker, low blood pressure, dizziness...

My 72 yo father had a pacemaker put in a few years ago and in the last few months he has had dizzy spells so bad he has to take a break while walking from the living room to the kitchen. He had a severe UTI a few weeks ago with a high fever and major confusion and took Cipro for 15 days. He had his pacemaker tuned up last week and since then his dizziness and low blood pressure has gotten worse and he has had diarrhea, nausea and dry heaves. The local doc says he’s dehydrated, but I&rsq...

MRI restriction coming to an end

There is a fun situation developing in the pacing world that I wanted to share with the group.

CMS has given the recomendation that all MRI labeling be stripped off of all pacemakers, ICD's and CRT devices. This isn't fully executed yet but its well on its way, certainly worth a watch. They did not mention leads yet, however, it's probably not far behind. Here's the decision memo

ECG During Transport to Hospital

Would appreciate any help reading some data from ECG.  I have dual chamber pm for bradicardia and I also have lung disease (bronchiectasis) and bad GERD.  I've been known to have occasional runs of benign PVC's.  Last week I was having some unusual symptoms of presyncope and syncope.  My cardiologist is sending me some home equipment from Medtronic, I guess to send data when I am symptomatic, and my internist is treating me for an upper respiratory & lower infe...

Discomfort to Sleep SideOn

Hello! So I've never been able to sleep on my chest, its just too uncomfortable and painful. But recently, over the past month or so, attempting to sleep on my (pacemaker) side has become more and more uncomfortable, with me taking ages to settle. I've become much more concious of my PM site, although theres no bruising around the scar. I had a checkup very recently, and its due to be changed next year. But in the mean time, any advice on what I should do? Is it worth getting an appoi...
