Thumping Diaphragm

I had a pacemaker since 1997 . The Doctor just added a 3rd lead, since then I have had a feeling like my heart is beating in my stomach. They tried to adjust the settings and it helped some. But I am getting really agiatated. Can anyone help me.

Go back and try again. Have Doctor/Rep test thresholds in all possible vectors(if your device has programmable LV vectors). Also make sure pulse width threshold is measured, and not just voltage. If this does not work, you have 3 options.

1. Surgically reposition lead.
2. Turn lead off.
3. Live with it the best you can .

I am truly sorry for your problems, hope all works out!

Hi - I also have had a pacemaker since 97. In 97 I had a similar complaint and they had to reposition the wires because it was pacing my diaphragm which was very uncomfortable. I hope they fix yours too because I can imagine having that problem long term, it is too annoying.

Good luck

Who is doing the programming?

The 3 lead pacer in particular has got to be more difficult to program and the docs don't have as much experience with them. I suggest asking for a programming session with the pacemaker manufacturers rep. My experience with the Medtronics reps is that they are very knowledgeable and take the time to deal with problems. They are almost always available, but you may need to be insistent. There is no reason for you to put up with discomfort until you have tried everything.

change the polarity?

I too had a paced chest wall/diaphragm with my new (9 months) ICD. A visit to the EP clinic and the tech was able to reverse the polarity on my 3rd lead. That fixed me. No guarantees (I suspect I was lucky), but I think a session with the rep (as suggested above) would be well worth the time.

I have had my pacer since 2005. At first it ruled my life. It took some time to calm down and make the mental adjustment. I had trouble sleeping and I worried a lot about pulling wires. Now I just live my life as I wish.
