hi
does any one know if it possible to have a mri during a procedure to do a box change. My pacemaker is over 11 years old and it approaching time to change the box. I desperately need a MRI scan to confirm if I have MS which I have been told by my doctor is 95% sure with the test and symptoms I have. I had a test done on my pacemaker today and was told by the technician that the leads are MRI safe. I was wondering if anyone has had this done.

Mri and box change

hi TraceyE
I have change hospitals for my pacing care from the royal Brompton to the royal London and Barts, my MS consultant Dr K Schieier is very keen on MRI from seeing him yesterday and reading about him on line. I will question this again when I see him in 3 months time.
I have been reading about the Medtronic sure safe device it need to be implanted with their own device and own leads.
If I do get a MRI it will be a 1 off never to be repeated. With MS they need to be 100% sure before starting treatment as there are other possible dxs

I have this pm. But it wasn't available until 2-3 years ago.
The Medtronic rep told me the history of developing an MRI compatible pm, and you may in fact have leads that are ok for an MRI. But the problem you most likely will have is finding an MRI Center that is willing to conduct the test.
Even tho I have the Revo, it took over a year (and MANY calls between hospital and Medtronics) before I got the MRI. But I live in the USA, and things in England might be different.
Good luck!

I am not planning on letting any of this shorten my life. I am planning on living a long happy battery operated life. You never know maybe it will keep me alive longer. I sure know one thing I would have been dead before starting school without it.

The leads are more important than the box itself for doing an mri. I would question again if your leads are safe as MRI safe leads were not common 11 years ago.
There are more and more places where they can safely do mri's on regular leads/boxes. You may have to travel, but it can be done with the right machinery and supervision.
If they are 95% sure, why the need to confirm with additional tests?
