Depression Anyone???
I was reading an article about depression and people with either ICD's or Pacemeakers. It said after the implant an astounding eighty something percent were permanently off their medication! I have battled depression for years and was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I am wondering if any of you have found any correlation betweeen the two. My ICD was only put in a month ago and I think I have gotten more depresses! LOL=) Anyways just curious.....any feedback would be great thanks!!

Depression

I believe it is common knowledge that heart problems often lead to depression. There are many types and levels of depression, one may not even really know they have depression... My husband was told these things after his major heart attack. And after watching him for the past 7 years, I believe it is true.
The same goes for PM and ICD's. It is a scary business. Only natural to feel saddened and worried that our hearts are being cranky and giving us trouble. Wouldn't we all like to go back "before"! When we felt better and didn't have to deal with this!
Life brings lots of challenges, and our hearts are just another one to face. Lots of good comes from many troubles, however. Meeting great folks on this site is one of them! Another is to wake up and enjoy each day as it is given to you! Life is a gift, and I think those of us with PM's or ICD's understand it a bit more than many others.

I just want to share about the quality of life after my pacemaker, and hopefully increase awareness that lifestyles do not have to be drastically modified just because we are pacemaker recipients.
Depression & implanted devices

Brooklynn,
I have no real answer to your question about the correlation of depression and implanted devices. My reply is more about the expressed increase of depression since the ICD was inserted. Please speak to your therapist or MD right away about your feelings as they may need to adjust, add or subtract medications.. or perhaps just have a good "talk it out session"
We are all here for you if you need to chat. Please keep us posted on how you are doing.
