Wt. Training

Concern about weight training was a major concern. I had my 1st device implanted in the fall of 07. I waited until a full range of motion had returned and began more resistive exercise. This followed about 6 weeks of walking and stretching. After about 4 weeks of upperbody strength work outs my bench presses jumped by 25 lbs. This worried me at first but with careful warmups and stretching i have continued with upper body stuff My device was replaced about 13 months later ,Needed a third wire (not because of breakage) I waited about 8 weeks before restarting my wt. training and spend more time on the stability ball with 25-35 # plates in a core routine. Upper body is still a great part of my routine. I am about to celebrate my 69thB'day and love every day thanks to my cardio team. Gary

...Keeps lifting me higher

Gary:

Great news!

I got my first pacer in '06, at age 55, because I wasn't able to work out at the gym -- exhaustion. Like you, I waited the 6-8 weeks my cardiologist recommended, and have been working it routinely since then. Nobody could mistake me for a fitness freak; I don't work hard because of my back, but the weight work helps reduce the back pain because many of the shoulder exercises strengthen core and back muscles.

Yes, weight work (and more importantly for me, treadmill and bike time) became easier and I found it easier to lose weight. I think anyone who can afford a gym membership should belong. My nearby Fitness USA has a month-to-month rate of $9! (I belong to 24 Hour Fitness, but it's not a lot more.)

Hey, ladies! Recent news states that women who've had breast cancer surgery, especially with lymph node removal, fared and felt better if they worked on upper body strength. That's contrary to older advice that they avoid lifting babies and groceries -- and even routine floor cleaning. It had to do with lymphedema, the accumulation of fluids in the arms because the nodes were gone.

Training around an injury!

by GMan - 2009-08-17 09:08:30

I'm looking at my Pacer 7/20/09 as I would a training injury. I plan to train around it. What do you guys think? Surely Leg Extensions, Leg Curls, Calf Raises, etc. and everything else except the left arm and some of my fav's like shouldar press, rows, pullovers, flyes, bench press. I plan to start tomorrow or at least this week. Once a musclehead always a musclehead! I drive occasionally to YORK BARBELL out here in PA. Great place to visit!

You know you're wired when...

You invested in the Energizer battery company.
