Cricket

Hi all,

I know most of you are based over in the US, but do any pacemaker people out there play cricket?? If so, any recommendations on padding for the pacemaker? I'm struggling to find any suitable products... that might be telling me something!

Chest protector

I don't know about the UK, but in the US we have chest protectors for kids playing baseball. They're kinda cumbersome but they do work.

I'm not familiar with Cricket. Don't know how often you run into the possibility of getting hit in the chest area. I'm thinking the chances are rather small. Do you stand sideways or frontal to the cricket ball?

Your PM could probably take a direct hit. You've got to be more concerned about the leads going out of the PM. If the PM or area close to it would get hit, then it could be a problem.

In the US we have kids with PM's playing baseball/softball. Since they stand sideways to the ball there's almost no danger to the PM while the person is up at bat. Danger comes when the person is in the outfield or pitching. There they could be directly facing the ball and have a chance to get hit in the chest area.

After you've had your PM for 90 days, you should be able to throw the ball with the arm on the same side as the PM. That's more than enough time for the body to grow around the leads. Of course, if the PM is on the side the

I suggest that you ask someone from Australia ; they seem to know far more about cricket than we do in the UK !

Thanks for your comments - I guess there is only a very small chance of getting hit exactly on the pacemaker and, even if it does, I can't imagine it doing huge amount of damage...? Cricket is played with a cork ball covered in leather so can hurt if you're hit with it. There is a range of protection you can get, but nothing for the pacemaker area.
Luckily the level I play at, I'm not facing bowlers with too fearful a pace!

Guys in the US, I'd recommend you check out cricket - 22 people standing around for 5 days wearing white. And it usually ends in a draw....

Thanks John. The issue with the chest protector is that it covers the rib cage more than the chest itself.
I've looked at the www.paceguard.com product and it looks ideal! Just waiting for them to come back to me to see if they deliver to UK.....
I would like to see you debate the NFL vs Rugby idea to the NFL guys! Good luck with that! (I'd suggest you invested in a chest protector of your own first!!)

Hi Rob, very envious that you are still able to play the greatest game ever devised by real men. I guess a chest protector should be the thing, though I had a thought that those shoulder protectors the rugger guys use might come down far enough over the PM, though you might look a bit butch. Our American friends will also struggle with rugger - a game the players in the NFL are absolutely scared to play. Best of luck. John
