I was just gifted with an armband to hold my cell phone while exercising. Is it safe to use? Does it matter right arm or left? Switch to leg? I'd be wearing it up to 5 hours on my walks and hikes.

I tried it out this morning and was fine. My walk was slow, mostly because of the heat. I know that feeling you had with store security. I just walk as fast as I can through those places. I felt it when I walked past university labs that had thick metal doors, noisy machinery beyond and warning signs. They must have been massive generators.
try it

Some people are warned about which side to use their cell phone but I was told don't worry about it, that my pm is well shielded and not affected by home electronics. It's the commercial stuff we have to be careful of. I clip my ipod to my top right over my pm then go run, have never had a problem. I've had one since 1994, have never paid much attention to what I let close to it, have never had a problem. I'll add I'm a total electronics geek so you name the toy, I've probably had it close to my pm! Wii, xbox, ipad, ipod, kindle, laptop, smart phone.
The first time I ever felt anything affect it was last week when I toured the local water treatment plant. I could feel it when we went in the generator room. I expected to and knew I probably shouldn't do that part of the tour, lol, but I was curious! As soon as we moved on to the next room I felt fine again.
In case you didn't know, when we get near a magnet it can pull the switch in the pm closed and put it in test mode. As soon as we get away from the magnet (usually 6", assuming the magnet is strong enough to do anything), the switch opens again and it goes back to full function with no harm done. So, when in doubt it won't do any harm to try it out and see if you feel a difference.
I hope it's not a problem

I put my phone in the left bicep picket of my shell when I run in the winter, I never had an issue during a run.

I read somewhere that you shouldn't have your cellphone in your pocket on the same side as your pm so just put it on the opposite side
