Sedation

Hello,

I read most of the posts on here but don’t post a whole lot. I had My pacemaker battery replaced yesterday. I had a very bad reaction to the awake sedation they give you during my ablation years ago so for the first pacemaker insertion I was awake with just a local. They did it under the muscle and when they cut through the muscle it felt like they were cutting bone. It was awful. Anyway this time they didn’t want to give me that sedation because of the reaction so decided to give me a Valium and Fentanyl mixed with some anti nausea medcination and Benadryl. Why the Benadryl I don’t know. Well during the surgery I sat up and was trying to get out of the restraints and leave. I was fighting everyone and trying to get away. Swung my feet over the side and was determined to leave. I didnt Have anything covering me because I had Kicked it all off so I was fighting everyone completely naked!!! I remember it but I thought I was dreaming and they were trying to kill me. They finally got me under control to finish the surgery. Afterwards I couldnt talk  or form rational sentences for hours. I couldnt Tell what was real and what wasn’t. It was terrible. I just Wondered if anyone else has ever had this kind of reaction to the sedation? I’m so embarrassed I acted that way!!!

Don't be embarrassed!

You were not responsible for your actions while DRUNK from the anesthesia.  Ever had Fentanyl before?  That may well have been the problem.  Fentanyl is a synthetic opiate, so it has many of the same side effects as morphine.  BUT, worse than than is the fact that Fentanyl is nearly 100 times more powerful than morphine!

All of the powerful opiates can cause hallucinations - Dilaudid, Fentanyl & Morphine.. Dilaudid  did that to me - fortunately they were harmless ones.  Following belly surgery, I had Dilaudid & thought my MD Daughter had come to the hosp to visit me.  We were holding a conversation as she  stood at the foot of my bed.  My wife was there & witnessed the whole event.  Thought I should be searching the floor for my marbles!  Same daughter has a patient who needs opiates to control chronic pain.  Morphine makes him hallucinate - very badly.  He was picked up by the cops running stark neked  through an apartment complex parking area, shouting obcenities & wavig his arms wildly.  Took him better than a day to return to normal.  He recalls none of the events whatsoever.  Cost him over $600 in fines, in spite of a letter from Daughter explaining the circumstances.  They did not even take him to the local hosp for diagnosis & possible treatment.  I think the court was run by a herd (Or whatever you call a bunch of them all in one spot) of kangaroos.   The prosecuter was a real piece of work - what he was (is) cannot be written in a public forum for polite people.  He terrified our patient by telling him that if he defended himself that he would lose & face significant jail time in ADDITIION to the fine, which would be even larger.

Bad experience

Sorry you had such a bad experience. Clearly, sedation doesn't work on you the same as other people, but what a terrible way to find that out.

A good hypnotherapist, in just a couple of sessions, could help you with the trauma, so that you don't relive it in your mind and feel embarrassed, but instead see it as if it happened to someone else and what you feel is great compassion for that person who is so helpless.

NOTE to DONR: a herd of kangaroos is called a mob--which sounds entirely appropriate, since mobs are noted for their entire irrationality.

Fentanyl

by nat36 - 2018-06-13 13:55:49

I have not had Fentanyl before so when the nurse giving it was saying it’s better than the other medicine that made me so sick I believed him. I still do not feel right. I’m not sure how much of that is just from recovering or all the meds given. I am also bruised all over now from being held down I guess.

I know it wasn’t my fault and it was the medicine but it’s still incredibly embarrassing that I did that. I’m not looking forward to my follow up with my doctor for sure.

Whoever gave you that Fentanyl...

...was a &^%$%^ fool!  If the original guilty med was morphine, Fentanyl should never have been given.  It's that potent.  When they talk about med strength, they talk milligrams of morphine.  comparatively, they talk MICROgrams of Fentanyl as an equivalent.  That's 1,000 times less Fentanyl than Morphine.

Propofal

by nat36 - 2018-06-14 10:37:14

The first medicine was propofal. Had horrible reaction to it. I was extremely sick throwing up and blood pressure stayed very low for about 24 hours afterwards. It was awful. So they wanted something different and went with the fentanyl. It wasn’t any better. I still don’t feel right and it’s been four days now.

High gone wrong

I'm surprised they gave you anything beyond a mild sedative and local.  I've been completely consious though several ablations and the PM implant (with AV node ablation at the same time).  I just had a couple of locals (groin and chest) for the PM procedure.  I'm not particularly bothered by these drugs (not to say that I'm not affected but I'm a happy drunk ;-).  My EP just doesn't believe in heavy sedation unless it's absolutely necessary.

Recovery

Yeah I thought we would just do a local again like the first time but when I got there they said since he was cutting the muscle I needed something stronger. I will deninitely deal with the pain of the cutting through the muscle before I go through anything like that again! That was Monday and I still do not feel right. I can’t seem to wake up and I’m just exhausted. I figured I would be up and mostly back to normal by now except a little sore. That is not the case. I am beginning to think something isn’t right. I stopped taking any pain meds just in case that was it but it didn’t help anything. I pushed myself today to get up and stay up most of the day but I just feel even worse tonight now.
