Thanks so much - my partner has been working on his sailboat for a year and we were looking forward to cruising the West Coast when this all happened to me - so we are VERY happy with your answer!!!

Robin,
Thanks so much for your response! Your comment about the "boom" reassured me that you knew exactly what you are talking about when it comes to sailboats. You and Tracey have been a wonderful help both technically and emotionally. I can now leave the pity party behiind and start planning without worry but with some precautions. Thanks for taking the time to respond - you made this a much Merrier Christmas - nice gift!!.
Geez.... I'm a Ham Radio Operator

I am 68 years old and had my PM implanted on my Birthday... 9/24 of this year. I have always been an avid Ham radio operator and not a day goes by that I am not "on the air". I use both HF ( up to 300 watts) and UHF/VHF (50 Watts) as well as GMRS and FRS radio frequencies. I have NEVER had any adverse experience while using any of my transcievers. I wouldn't recommend holding your antenna while transmitting, but other than that, don't fret over using your Marine band radio. By the way Transmitters put out electromagnetic radio waves or Radio Frequency (RF).... NOT Electrical Interference.... LOL.

I don't know specifically about sailing but in general if it's going to cause problems, it needs to be a very strong magnet as well as within 6" of our device. We can jump start cars and start a generator but it's not recommended we linger. I've done both without issue as well as tour a power plant and the generator room of a water treatment plant. My husband has some serious ham radio equipment in the house. I run with my ipod clipped over my pacer, read with my tablet propped on my chest. None of it is going to do any damage, worst case it puts it in test mode until we get away from it. The little white thing they use when they interrogate? That's a magnet. It pulls a switch closed, once it's removed the switch opens and it returns to full function. Unless we are in an industrial setting, we have very little to be concerned with. Live your life as you wish, these little things are very well shielded.
