Broken leads

Hi, just found this forum.  I was wondering if anyone has had an issue with broken leads?  My son is 7 and will be having surgery for his 3rd set of leads!  They are Medtronic and the cardiologist told me they were the only ones that make these exterior leads.  Is that true?  Something is wrong, why would they keep breaking if not?

Thanks

Dave

Lead Placement

I think that you should consider discussing the positioning of the pacemaker with the medical team.

Things to consider

Is the pacemaker in the abdomen? If it is, then it is very open for an active 7 year old.  Is he adhering to his medical advice?  It is sometimes hard for a 7 year old to understand why they should not be doing certain contact sports especially if all his friends are taking part.

Is your son growing quickly?  The surgical team may not be coiling enough wire to allow for growth.  Some children do have issues with wires linked to growth.

How much longer is left on the battery?  If they are replacing the leads and if there is not much battery left should the full system be replaced and moved to a different position were the device and leads are better protected.

Some children have the pacemaker tucked under their arm if they are not big enough to have the device in the adult position.
